  • Today we remember comedian Richard Lewis on the anniversary of his passing. Most recently beloved for his role in “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Lewis’ sharp delivery and dark sense of humor carried him from Greenwich Village comedy clubs to “The Tonight Show” to Carnegie Hall. On a night in 1989 that he called “the highlight of his career,” Lewis performed a 2 ? hour set on that historic stage while carrying six feet of yellow legal sheets densely packed with material. Now part of the National Comedy Center’s permanent collection, one of those sheets is pictured here courtesy of Richard Lewis and Joyce Lapinsky.?

  • On this day 75 years ago, “Your Show of Shows” premiered. Written by a team of comedy innovators that included Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, and Lucille Kallen, the show’s virtuoso cast was helmed by Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca, with Carl Reiner and Howard Morris. “Your Show of Shows” set a high bar for comedy variety shows on television, and tales from its storied writers’ room inspired generations of comedians.

  • Today, we remember Johnny Carson 20 years after his passing. The legendary “King of Late Night” held court on The Tonight Show for 30 years — introducing, chatting with and laughing with dozens of performers who would become household names. Carson’s incredible career and impact on comedy and American audiences is celebrated daily in the National Comedy Center’s multimedia exhibit — Johnny Carson: The Immersive Experience, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Equal parts hilarious and heartfelt, the experience takes visitors on a laugh-out-loud ride through Carson’s famous monologues, characters and interviews while featuring touching tributes and personal stories from many of comedy’s biggest stars. Here’s an excerpt from the museum experience. #JohnnyCarson?#RememberingJohnnyCarson?#TheTonightShow?#TonightShow?#NationalComedyCenter

  • Today, on the first anniversary of his passing, we remember the revolutionary spirit of Tom Smothers, whose extraordinary legacy exemplifies comedy’s power to shape conversations of national importance. “The obligation of a comedian is first to entertain. And if you’re so inclined, and you have some bigger thought, make sure you express it, because that’s a gift.” – Tom Smothers (February 2, 1937 – December 26, 2023) In 2019, Tommy and Dick marked the 50th anniversary of their firing by CBS and unveiled a new display showcasing artifacts from their archive at the National Comedy Center. #TomSmothers #SmothersBrothers #NationalComedyCenter
