National Center for Physical Acoustics is a research organization of the University of Mississippi. NCPA maintains basic and applied research programs in many areas of physical acoustics; provides coordination of major, multi-university research programs in the United States; serves as an advocate for physical acoustics to federal agencies and other organizations; provides significant educational opportunities for students and postdocs; and provides direct research assistance to investigators throughout the world.

Led by Dr. Roger Waxler, this study shows how infrasound monitoring arrays can track tornadoes up to 100 km away, detecting unique low-frequency signals that could improve warning systems and public safety. TECHNICAL AREA PICK From Physical Acoustics TC Chair Christopher Kube: “This study demonstrates the effectiveness of infrasound monitoring arrays in detecting and tracking tornadoes at distances up to 100km, providing detailed analysis of data collected during a significant tornado outbreak in Alabama in March 2018. The researchers found that tornadoes consistently emit infrasound signals in the 2-6 Hz range, and their analysis showed distinct differences in signal strength between tornadic and non-tornadic storms - a finding that could prove valuable for distinguishing between these weather events. By combining infrasound array data with atmospheric propagation modeling and advanced signal processing techniques, the team was able to track multiple simultaneous tornadoes complementing and, in some cases, going beyond traditional radar-based warnings. The study also revealed that the infrasound-based tracking sometimes showed longer tornado paths than officially reported, suggesting this technology might provide more complete information about tornado behavior and lifecycle.
