关于我们
Expanding horizons in meteorology and weather forecasting, water cycle hydrology, oceanography, solar physics, atmospheric chemistry and air quality, climate science, computer science, environmental science, and STEM education. We provide research, observing and computing facilities, and services for the atmospheric and Earth system science community. With UCAR, we promote partnership in a collaborative community of university and laboratory researchers dedicated to understanding the atmosphere and the interconnected processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean floor to the Sun's core. NSF NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

When #hurricanes make landfall, it can be baffling to see the variety of wind damage in the same city, especially when one area experiences more damage than another, similar area. Now, using a hi-res model, scientists are simulating what happens to hurricane winds when they hit complex urban landscapes– and the results are exciting. Created by a research team from NSF NCAR and the University of Miami led by Christopher Rozoff, the new simulations show how structures generate distinct wind patterns, tunneling and amplifying winds in urban canyons between buildings while contributing to weaker winds downstream. Scientists have identified that the Sun likely has polar vortices at its poles, similar to the Earth!?? The findings impact our basic understanding of the Sun’s magnetism and the solar cycle, which could improve our ability to predict disruptive space weather. The science team relied on computer models to fill in what solar polar vortices might look like since the Sun’s poles have never been observed. Findings show the Sun is likely to have a unique pattern of polar vortices that evolves as the solar cycle unfolds and depends on the strength of any particular cycle. It’s that time of the year again– internship season at NSF NCAR and UCAR! First up, we’re excited to announce that our NESSI #internship is open and accepting applications! The NSF NCAR Earth System Science Internship (NESSI) offers undergraduate students interested in the Earth system sciences an opportunity to conduct research with scientists and engineers from across NSF NCAR. Managed by the NSF NCAR Education, Engagement and Early Career Development team, the program is designed to support and promote Earth system science through research, mentoring, and community building. Applications close on January 6, 2025: https://bit.ly/4hJL59p #fellowship #undergraduate #undergradopportunities

New comprehensive review paper led by Argonne National Laboratory with co-authors at NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research ???? Scientists urge more research to protect offshore wind farms from extreme weather “This type of collaboration is vital for assessing gaps in our knowledge about these extreme events so we can help the nation make use of its excellent offshore wind resources,” said NSF NCAR Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) scientist Sue Ellen Haupt, a co-author of the paper. The historic Mesa Laboratory is filled with haunting curiosities, like hidden tunnels, odd rooms, and *lightning crash* a secret rainshaft in Tower B of Terror! ?? For #Halloween, here’s a spooky science #storytime about NSF NCAR history; (un)settle in for a tale of science and mystery! ?? The rainshaft in gothic Tower B extends from the fourth floor up to the penthouse and functioned as an enclosed space to enable cloud microphysics experiments involving electricity– paging Dr. Frankenstein, amirite? According to a recently exhumed Staff Notes article from 1966, early experiments conducted in the rainshaft included creating an “electrical corona” to study the role of electrically charged raindrops in the production of lightning. And, the most mysterious part– the very same article includes a picture of ominous text with no further elaboration: "Danger: The first step is two (2) stories down!" In 1970, the rainshaft was repurposed into a vertical wind tunnel, effectively laying to rest the lightning studies in the mysterious rainshaft. ?? Earlier this month, NSF NCAR received a major grant from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration aimed to improve projections of future climate. The grant will allow researchers to run multiple computer model simulations, providing decision makers with information about key climate variables 20 years and beyond into the future. These multi-decadal climate projections will address a wide array of risks like heavy precipitation, temperature extremes, drought, and coastal flooding.
