Connecting with the source of your food can be a powerful experience, especially as a child. NCAT is pleased to play a role in introducing children to the wonders of agriculture. Right at our headquarters in Butte, Montana, our urban demonstration farm has partnered with the local YMCA summer camp program for several years. Over the course of the growing season, campers come to the site regularly, to plan, plant, tend, harvest, and eat a variety of vegetables. From painting row markers to cultivating early-season crops in the donated high tunnel dedicated to the program, kids engage with their food. This is just one of the ways NCAT supports strong local and regional food systems. If you'd like to become involved, you can learn more and get ideas for initiatives in your area from our ATTRA website's topic area on Regional Food Systems, at https://buff.ly/3BJ4giS

  • Getting fresh, local food into schools is an important part of Farm to School programs, but equally important is creating opportunities for young people to grow their own food. This week we're celebrating the many programs that build gardens and farm education programs in schools, allowing kids to get their hands dirty and learn what it takes to get food from seed to plate. We're kicking off the week with a spotlight on greenhouses. Does your school already have a greenhouse? Do you want to add a greenhouse to your in school farm or garden program? Whether planting gardens, growing for Farm to School programs, or integrating plant science into an existing curriculum, our Greenhouse Manual has answers that educators need. Developed in a partnership between NCAT, the U.S. Botanic Garden and City Blossoms, the manual helps educators maximize the potential of new and existing school greenhouses. • Fun Fact Friday: Farm to School can help regenerate rural economies! ?? ???? ?? According to the USDA Farm to School Census in the 2018-2019 school year about $1.3 billion was spent by schools on locally sourced food products. Purchasing local food products by schools has increased steadily in the last ten years, and such spending helps create and retain jobs for producers and generate additional spending on local economies. Talk about a #multipliereffect! Photo: Farm to School workshop at Manor ISD #FarmtoSchool #localeconomies #ruraleconomies

  • What does it take for schools to bring farm fresh food into their food services? Intention, planning, and coordination with farmers and local food systems. This week we'll share resources designed to help food service leaders at institutions like schools and hospitals source local food for their operations. In this Voices from the Field podcast, Sustainable Agriculture Specialist Tammy Howards talks with Alison Patrick of the Feed our Future initiative, based in northeast Ohio. Tammy and Alison talk about the Feed our Future Farm to School pilot program, which led to the development of a school purchasing cooperative and a wide expansion of local produce purchasing. They also discusses the important role that food hubs have played in providing the quantity and consistency that school require.
