When a plastic bottle enters the ocean, it doesn’t stay a bottle forever! Instead, plastics break up into smaller and smaller pieces in the ocean. These microplastics can be swallowed by tiny marine animals, and when larger animals eat those animals, they’re unknowingly eating plastic too. Ocean wildlife that eat too many microplastics could suffer serious side effects, including internal injuries, feeding less, and even serious behavior changes that threaten the animal’s health and long-term survival. Marine life should not have to pay the price for our plastic crisis!
