#SearchWaterFirst: Our hearts are heavy this morning after an 8-year-old with autism wandered away from her aunt's home and into a nearby pond. In 2025, six children with autism have died after wandering/elopement, all but one from drowning. This is also the 9th autism-wandering fatality in Texas since 2024. Most families, including relatives, are not aware wandering can occur, or of the heightened drowning risk for children with autism. "Despite the father's best efforts to child-proof the door locks so that his son couldn't wander off, he woke up later that night and was shocked to find him missing." Several months ago, a child with autism died of hypothermia after wandering away. Bravo to these officers, and the person who took action to make the call. #autism https://lnkd.in/e-qVc4EZ

Devastating on so many levels. Families will often move to other states to seek better services. Oftentimes, they are unaware that wandering/elopement risks can increase after a new move, or that elopement patterns can change. Our hearts go out to this beautiful family.
