March 18, 1937 – New London School Explosion / New London, TX (kills 296) On this day in 1937, an explosion at the New London School in New London, Texas killed nearly 300 students when an undetected gas leak was ignited. The explosion cause the school’s walls to bulge, the roof to lift from the main building, and the main wing of the structure to collapse. As was customary at the time, a natural gas residue line was tapped and used to provide fuel to the gas heaters throughout the school. Experts concluded that the connection to the residue gas line was faulty. The connection had allowed gas to leak into the school. Natural gas in its natural state is odorless and colorless. Therefore, the leak went undetected for some time, despite children complaining of headaches. A spark is believed to have ignited the gas-air mixture. Within weeks, this tragic event led to the Texas legislature, as well as other agencies, to require mercaptans to be added to natural gas, allowing leaks to be detected more quickly. The practice quickly spread worldwide. Regulation of the practice of engineering was also quickly strengthened.? #FireHistory #NeverForget

This week’s fire safety theme is “Medical Oxygen Safety.” Medical oxygen adds a higher percentage of oxygen to the air a patient uses to breathe. Fire needs oxygen to burn. If a fire should start in an oxygen-enriched area, the material burning will burn more quickly. Smoking materials is the leading heat source resulting in medical oxygen related fires, injuries, and deaths. #MedicalOxygenSafety #FirePrevention #FireSafetyTips
