I spoke at the NASEO - National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO)'s 2025 Energy Policy Outlook Conference about the challenges facing our electric grid in the year ahead. It’s now up to the states to forge ahead on decarbonizing our energy system while still meeting our energy needs affordably and reliably. ? I urged state officials to end the political games and work together—the challenges we face are simply too great to walk away from the table. We must work together to meet this moment and fulfill our responsibility to the American people.

What a great trip with NASEO - National Association of State Energy Officials colleague to provide education on the value State Energy Programs. The states represented range from east to west coast and everything in between yet we all work toward energy security and affordability.

The 2025 Energy Policy Outlook Conference got off to an energetic start today, as hundreds of State and Territory Energy Officials, private sector leaders, and other experts convened in Washington, DC for discussions on "America’s Competitive Advantage – Abundant, Affordable, and Reliable Energy." The theme of the day? ? The challenge - and opportunity - to meet growing power demand, and the pivotal role of #StateEnergyOffices to advance practical, data-driven, and locally relevant programs, plans, and investments in support of economic development, national security, and environmental imperatives. As the Honorable Doris Matsui keenly observed, "we must chart a path that is both forward-looking and feasible." Today at the 2025 Energy Policy Outlook Conference, NASEO launched the Advanced Nuclear First Mover Initiative, representing a multi-state commitment to accelerating advanced nuclear projects.?The Initiative will be led by co-chairs from NYSERDA, Indiana's Office of Energy Development, Kentucky's Office of Energy Policy, Tennessee's Office of Energy Programs, and Wyoming Energy Authority, with additional participation from the Maryland Energy Administration, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Utah Office of Energy Development, Virginia Department of Energy, and the West Virginia Office of Energy. Governor Janet Mills today announced that she will propose elevating the Governor's Energy Office (GEO) to a cabinet-level department as part of her upcoming biennial budget proposal. Establishing the Maine Department of Energy Resources outside of the Governor's Office, where GEO currently resides, would allow for a more integrated, comprehensive, and consistent approach to the planning and management of Maine's energy system, helping Maine more effectively prioritize affordable and reliable energy for all Maine people and businesses. Today, NASEO - National Association of State Energy Officials, in partnership with AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), Atlas Public Policy, and the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, launched the?NEVI Awards Dashboard. ? The NEVI Awards Dashboard tracks electric vehicle (EV) charging sites funded by states through the?National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.?The Dashboard also showcases key data regarding progress states have made in implementing the NEVI program, including which states have issued solicitations for sites, announced awards, opened stations, and/or achieved "fully built out" status. To date, 42 states have issued at least one solicitation (with some states having issued several), 36 states have issued awards, and 11 states have at least one operational station open to the public. ? "The work State Energy Offices, State Departments of Transportation, and their private-sector partners have put in over the past three years – building on EV infrastructure programs in place for a decade – is paying off," said NASEO President, David Terry. Webinar: Advancing a CO2 Transport Network in the United States on November 7, 2024, 2:00 - 3:00 PM ET. Please join NASEO, the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management | U.S. Department of Energy, the Great Plains Institute, and ExxonMobil for a virtual discussion on CO2 transport and considerations for State Energy Offices next week. As CCUS technology gets deployed across the country, the need for a more robust transport network will be needed to bring captured CO2 to end-users and sequestration sites. Pipeline development in the United States is currently hampered by a number of factors related to the regulatory landscape, community and landowner concern, and cost. This webinar will explore some of these considerations and provide State Energy Offices with expert information from industry, NGOs, and state officials involved in the process.?

NASEO,?the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), and Berkeley Lab invite State and Territory Energy Offices, public utility commissions, and utility consumer advocates to participate in one of three regional trainings in Charlotte, North Carolina, Detroit, Michigan, or Salt Lake City, Utah, on integrated distribution system planning. The training includes technical courses, peer-sharing, office hours with trainers, and a half-day state action planning workshop, covering all new topics with a focus on planning for electrification and distributed energy resources. Following the training is an optional site visit to EPRI's Charlotte Laboratory on the morning of Friday, December 13. Additional details forthcoming. ?
