To fix the traffic safety crisis, we must address state-owned arterials: Most traffic deaths in urban areas occur on state-owned urban arterials, outside of city control. They’re too-big, too-wide, too-fast streets that disproportionately kill and disproportionately cut through lower-income neighborhoods. No one wants these outcomes. Across the country, there are examples of cities and states working together to make these dangerous streets safer, no matter what mode of transportation people are using–and plenty of opportunities to do more. https://lnkd.in/eSxhPNe4

Today is World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. Traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable: let’s honor victims and their families by advocating for change and safer streets. We know how to sharply cut traffic deaths. Build safe streets, transit lanes, sidewalks, and bike networks instead of road expansions. Reduce speed limits. Reform vehicle safety standards to protect pedestrians and bike riders. To end this crisis, we need #SafeStreetsForPeople. #WDoR2024

Narrower vehicle lanes can result in slower driving speeds and reduced crossing distances for pedestrians. NACTO’s Urban Street Design Guide recommends that cities use 10-foot travel lanes to discourage speeding (or 11-foot lanes on designated truck and bus routes). Additional width may be necessary at turns! If the street can accommodate wider lanes, use striping or buffers to clearly separate travel lanes from parking, bike, and transit lanes.

In the U.S., kids are three times more likely to die in traffic on #Halloween than any other day of the year. Why? Just another example of the country's pedestrian safety crisis. The good news? We can fix it.

We love a conference where the highlights are mini-yet-mighty vehicles: Delivery-by-e-bike, smart trucks with high visibility, and an engaged group of city leaders that are doing the ??u?n?glamorous work of slogging through government procurement processes to create better outcomes for their residents.
