Release of the US Government Accountability Office's biennial High-Risk list is always a big day here at GovNavigators. The report, produced for decades, traditionally identifies areas where the federal government is vulnerable to fraud, waste, and inefficiency—and where progress has been made. Key Findings: - $84 billion in financial benefits achieved from improvements since 2023. - 10 areas improved, but 3 regressed, showing the ongoing challenge of government reform. - Delivery of Federal Disaster Assistance was added as FEMA and other agencies struggle to keep up with the increasing frequency and cost of disasters (h/t climate change). - Critical issues remain in improper payments ($150B+ annually not to mention ~$500B in annual fraud losses), tax gaps ($600B+ in uncollected revenue), and IT modernization failures. This can -- must -- be more than just a report. It is a blueprint for action. With billions on the line, these insights and recommendations could shape the next President’s Management Agenda or serve as a framework for the Department of Government Efficiency to drive genuine, measurable, lasting reform.
