The NAI was founded in 2010 to recognize and encourage inventors with patents issued from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, enhance the visibility of academic technology and innovation, encourage the disclosure of intellectual property, educate and mentor innovative students, and to create wider public understanding of how its members’ inventions benefit society. The NAI publishes the multidisciplinary journal Technology and Innovation, Journal of the National Academy of Inventors.

The NAI had the privilege of recently participating in the AUTM 2025 Annual Meeting, where we engaged in a dynamic panel discussion on recognizing and promoting academic inventors to drive innovation forward! The panel featured NAI President Dr. Paul R. Sanberg, FNAI; University of Maryland’s Dr. Ken Porter, SMNAI; Jackson State University’s Dr. Almesha L. Campbell, HonNAI, NAI Invention Ambassador; and NAI Board Member and the USPTO’s Elizabeth Dougherty, HonNAI. Together, we explored how universities can leverage NAI programs to enhance their technology transfer and innovation ecosystems through NAI Chapters, faculty recognition, and strategic partnerships.
