Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. The mission of the National Academy of Engineering is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology. The NAE has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and international members, senior professionals in business, academia, and government who are among the world’s most accomplished engineers. They provide the leadership and expertise for numerous projects focused on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life. The NAE is part of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Congratulations to NAE members James Fujimoto, Kerrie Holley, David Huang, Pamela Marrone, and Eric Swanson for being named 2025 National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees! Fujimoto, Huang, and Swanson are recognized for inventing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), “a method for imaging layers of body tissue in unprecedented detail”. They also received the NAE’s 2017 Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize for inventing OCT. We are proud to announce Nick McKeown, Senior Fellow at Intel Corporation and Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, as the recipient of the prestigious 2025 Marconi Prize! He is recognized for his fundamental contributions to high-performance switches and routers and to software defined networking and for transferring these contributions into widespread practice. Nick McKeown’s scientific contributions have fundamentally transformed modern networking. He enabled scalable Internet routers, efficient switch fabric scheduling, virtual output queuing, buffer sizing, and network memory. Beyond academia, McKeown has successfully bridged the gap between research and industry, co-founding multiple startups that have redefined networking. Nick will be honored at the Marconi Awards Gala and Tech Institutes on November 14, 2025, in Los Angeles, CA.
