Nashville Zoo’s Conservation Corner: The Purple Martin Phenomenon ???? At Nashville Zoo, we are passionate about making a difference not just for the animals we house but for our entire community. One of our proudest achievements is our Avian department’s role?in the incredible conservation story of the Purple Martin—a bird whose presence in Nashville is nothing short of spectacular! ?? Conservation Success: As part of our conservation efforts, Nashville Zoo is one of many contributing partners and newly dubbed Steering Committee member?to?The Urban Bird Treaty program?(UBT).?By being a member of the program, Nashville Zoo has pledged to help educate the public about birds and conservation while also assisting in local conservation efforts such as monitoring the Purple Martins. Nashville Zookeeper Rachael Payton is a member of the Purple Martin task force and serves as the Zoo’s representative and committee chair member for the UBT. ?? Community Impact: This phenomenon is not only?about the thousands of birds that roost here in Nashville, but also a testament to what can be achieved when we come together for a cause. Our combined efforts have engaged local schools, community groups, and bird enthusiasts, fostering a shared sense of responsibility for our natural world. ?? Research and Education: Beyond conservation, we are committed to educating the public about the Purple Martin's role in our ecosystem. Through the support of interactive programs and detailed observations, our goal is?to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Nashville Zoo takes immense pride in all our community partnerships that help us live out our mission to inspire a culture of understanding and discovery of our natural world through conservation, innovation, and leadership.? ?? We are excited to celebrate 5 years with our partners at Engineering for US All (e4usa), a program where students in the e4usa+Design course at Bentwood High School in Tennessee have been applying their engineering skills to create innovative enrichment toys, enhancing the welfare of our animals. ?????? ?? ?? Through our partnership, students apply their skills in a hands-on environment, working directly with zookeepers and veterinary staff to create innovative solutions that benefit both animals and the Zoo’s operations. Students have made significant contributions to the Zoo, from developing enrichment items that prevent stereotypical behaviors in animals to working on a sophisticated animal lift project with the veterinary clinic.? ?? STEM programs are incredibly important to our society at large, and we are thrilled to be able to contribute to the awareness of these education programs. Our partnership is an example of how hands-on engineering education can make a real-world impact. On Monday, August 26, Rick Schwartz, President and CEO of Nashville Zoo, was awarded a special honor from the State General Assembly. The 2024 Omnibus Highway and Bridge Naming bill has officially named the stretch of Nolensville Pike from the CSX Railroad Bridge north of the Zoo's entrance to Harding Place as "Rick Schwartz Wild Works Way." This designation is a tribute to Rick's extraordinary impact on Nashville through his visionary leadership at Nashville Zoo. When Rick founded Nashville Zoo at Grassmere in 1996, he faced numerous challenges. Still, through tireless efforts, he has created a beloved gem for the Nashville community, earning multiple awards for his innovative exhibit designs. Furthermore, his advocacy for local and global conservation programs underscores our collective ability to preserve wildlife. His vision of the future will further cement his place in the history of Nashville Zoo, the middle Tennessee region and throughout the State of Tennessee. During our August Board meeting, Representative Jason Powell presented Rick with a symbolic road sign. Mayor Freddie O'Connell shared many of the successes the Zoo has had under Rick's leadership; and Senator Jason Yarbro and Council Member Courtney Johnston spoke about Rick’s tremendous contributions and passionate commitment to the Zoo’s growth and to the Nashville Community.
