Nashi Immigrants Health Board is partnering with Lake Washington Institute of Technology to provide capstone opportunities for public health students. We are pleased to introduce our current student partner Maryna Shumikhina. Maryna has a degree in Microbiology from Ukraine and over 20 years of experience in clinical medical laboratories, specializing in diagnostic testing, quality control, and workflow optimization. After relocating to Washington due to the war in Ukraine, she decided to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science in Public Health at Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) to apply her expertise meaningfully, and is currently a student there. Passionate about research, community health, disease prevention, and health education, she is completing her capstone project with Nashi Immigrants Health Board, under the direction of Tamara Cyhan Cunitz, MN, RN, designing health education workshops and engaging in community health outreach with the Ukrainian community. The first health topic Maryna collaborated on was, "Neurodivergent Neurological Diagnoses in Early Childhood," focused on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and other conditions. The workshop aims to educate families on the impact of these conditions on early childhood development, equip parents with tools to support their children, and connect them with legal, educational, and community resources in Washington State. We will present this topic at Open Doors For Multicultural Families on Wednesday February 19, 2025.

How do Ukrainian immigrants and refugees contribute to our beautiful and diverse state of Washington? What skills and assets do they bring? What challenges do they face during resettlement? Answers to these and other important questions will be highlighted after we complete our next large-scale survey of our Ukrainian community in partnership with PORSESH POLICY RESEARCH INSTITUTE . This data can inform policy and practice in our state and can enhance program delivery. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/g43-CHgG
??Announcing “Survey of the Ukrainian Immigrants in WA State” Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022 displaced millions of people, creating the largest refugee crisis in Europe since WWII. The state of Washington has received 27,000 Ukrainian immigrants between February 2022 and July 2024. Refugees from Ukraine are carrying a heavy mental health toll from fleeing their homes, losing loved ones, and witnessing violence. Furthermore, they often face challenges in navigating transportation, healthcare, and the workforce in their new home. To learn more about the support needs of Ukrainian immigrants in Washington Porsesh Policy Research Institute is partnering with Nashi Immigrants Health Board on a new mixed-methods research study, “Survey of the Ukrainian Immigrants in WA State”. This research will employ both qualitative and quantitative methods to identify and address the needs and perspectives of newcomers, focusing on eight key areas: demographics, immigration, housing, education, employment, health, and cultural integration. With this knowledge, policymakers, local service providers and organizations will be better equipped to develop more effective strategies to help these new residents transition into their new home.
