Today at Tufts University in Boston, the NASA Lifelines Humanitarian Simulation reached its climax. Playing live with hubs in Nairobi, Goma, DC, St. Louis, Geneva, and participants around the world, our Boston team responded to a challenging real-life crisis in the DRC, involving the chaos of a simultaneous volcanic eruption, armed conflict, and an humanitarian crisis. Of course, they did great! With tomorrow being the all-important final day of the simulation, I have no doubt that this will be the first of many Lifelines events in Boston. We all had a great time – thank you for coming, team!

The first day of the inaugural Lifelines Humanitarian Simulation, in collaboration with Imaginetic, has wrapped up! Nearly 300 participants and 39 facilitators from multiple countries joined us, both in-person and virtually, for an action-packed 4 hours. ? This 3-day event immerses participants in a real-world humanitarian crisis scenario. Teams are assigned specific roles to manage and respond to crises. The theme of the first day of the simulation centered on conflict early warning and how professionals from different sectors can address this theme. We look forward to the second day of our Simulation tomorrow! ? Get a peek into the in-person Hub hosted by Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team in Nairobi in the pictures below!

NASA Lifelines partnered with OneUpAction International for a Climate Justice Supper Club in Central Park during New York Climate Week. Climate activists from across the world gathered together for a picnic-style conversation on what climate justice means to them and the role of satellite data in contributing to progress in climate justice.? ? Throughout the Supper Club, three key themes emerged: representation, youth involvement and advocacy, and finding community. As climate conversations become more prominent, there's a growing push to recognize that certain communities, like those in the Global South, are disproportionately affected by climate change. It’s also essential to include Indigenous voices in climate justice solutions. Representation also extends to youth. One participant pointed out that climate change is often framed as an impending disaster, rather than a current reality experienced by young activists. The involvement of youth in the climate justice movement challenges that narrative, as they understand the urgency of acting now. While it’s inspiring to see so many groups engaging in climate work, the Supper Club also made space for participants to process their fears. The discussion closed by acknowledging the very real ecological grief many feel, but it was tempered by cautious optimism, as participants found a sense of community through this work. ? Climate change is a threat that requires continuous energy, action, and collaboration to combat—and hopefully, one day, overcome. The most recent Supper Club highlighted the ongoing need to unite Earth scientists and the humanitarian community in interdisciplinary efforts. ?
