Today, we're celebrating 80 years of cool aviation research! On Sept. 13, 1944, researchers conducted the first test within the Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) at the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory (now NASA’s Glenn Research Center) to study inflight ice buildup. Throughout the IRT's operation, the aviation industry has relied on the facility and its experts to develop and refine their ice protection systems, significantly reducing the risk of ice-related accidents. Together with magniX, we recently revealed the Dash 7—one of the research aircraft that will demonstrate the capabilities of hybrid electric propulsion. This aircraft is one of two testbed vehicles that will be modified with new electrified aircraft propulsion systems to carry out both ground and flight tests with our industry partners. If you were to ask us about our Icing Research Tunnel, we'd say it's pretty "cool." ????? But if you asked us on a deeper level... ....we'd tell you that it's the oldest and one of the largest icing tunnels in the world. It's been operating on a regular basis for 80 years and been used to develop nearly every modern ice protection system for aircraft. ? It's provided key icing environment data to regulatory agencies. ? It's validated leading ice prediction software. ? The tunnel can reduce air temperatures to around -30 degrees Fahrenheit, uses an innovative spray nozzle system to create small, very cold droplets that simulate natural icing clouds, and can generate air speeds up to 374 miles per hour.
