The best adventures are the ones that take you to places you never thought you'd go. So you can imagine my excitement when I received an invite to judge at the NASA Space Apps Challenge Mountain View. Getting to call the NASA Ames Research Center home for the weekend was surreal. Two days of soaking up knowledge from all corners of the galaxy through panels with the Technology Directors at NASA, keynotes and fireside chats with astronauts in commercial space flight and at NASA.
But the main event was the Space Apps global hackathon, where coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, technologists, and innovators from around the world gather, was a great reminder that our only limits are those we place on ourselves.
Participants ranged from teenagers still in high school to budding entrepreneurs studying at university. In collaboration with fourteen international space agencies, NASA provides a platform for thousands of participants to tackle some of Earth's and space's most pressing challenges using open data from these agencies. The innovation hub of Mountain View hosted 42 teams with hundreds attending in person and virtually, each bringing some truly incredible ideas to the table.
I have often been told (and overheard others sharing their 2 pence!) that the world is made up of dreamers and doers. I have never wanted to subscribe to this idea myself. Still, it would be an understatement to say that I was just a little bit proud and amazed to see that so many solutions created during the hackathon showcased ingenuity and tangibility that make me optimistic for the future.?
It's inspiring to see so many brilliant minds setting out to be both dreamers and doers, making it their mission to craft a world that seamlessly blends imagination with action.?
Congratulations to the Space Apps Mountain View lead, Martina Dimoska, who tirelessly works to make this such a fantastic event along with the rest of the SA team. It was a honour to be a part of it!
