A NASA consortium to bolster productive, economic, and environmental resilience in U.S. agriculture
关于我们
NASA Acres is NASA's U.S.-focused agriculture and food security Consortium of more than 25 top-of- the field scientists and practitioners in agricultural remote sensing, artificial intelligence, soil science, specialty crop, row crop, rangeland agronomy, sociology, economics, and data policy. The Consortium is led by the University of Maryland with Research, Development, and Extension Partners at nine other universities and two supporting private organizations. OUR MISSION NASA Acres brings the value of Earth observation (EO) technology down to Earth. We bridge the gap from space-to-farm and education-to-impact together with U.S. farmers, ranchers, and other agrifood system decision makers who are charged with addressing the most pressing challenges to sustainable, productive, and resilient agriculture, both today and into the next generation.

“Growing up in South Dakota, I saw firsthand the challenges farmers face. Today, I’m proud to help provide the tools and data that can make a real difference in their lives,” says Bradley Doorn. “Whether it’s a farmer, an economist, or a military analyst, if you give them the right tools, they’ll take them to places you never even thought about. That’s what excites me—seeing where they go.” We are so grateful to get to work with Bradley Doorn! ?? ??? Recently Vineyard Team met with Alyssa Whitcraft to discuss how NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is making it easier to use satellite data in agriculture. "NASA has connected data about the Earth’s surface since 1972. One of the first applications was for agriculture. Alyssa Whitcraft, Executive Director of NASA Acres grew up in the wine industry at her family’s property, Whitcraft Winery, located in Santa Barbara California. Her goal is to make it easier for people and organizations to use satellite data to improve agriculture. Alyssa explains how different types of satellites including polar-orbiting and geostationary collect information that can be calibrated against crop-specific data to develop predictive models. Farmers can use these models to identify viral, fungal, bacterial, water, and nutrient stressors and forecast harvest. While this technology is being used in commodity crops today, there is a huge opportunity for specialty crops." ???? Listen to or read the full interview here ?? https://lnkd.in/g9QmsTDK

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and IBM release open-source #AI model for #weather and #climate applications Developed with contributions from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the model is available in open source to the scientific, developer and business communities, and offers a flexible, scalable way to address a variety of challenges related to short-term weather as well as long-term climate projection. ? "Advancing NASA's Earth science for the benefit of humanity means delivering actionable science in ways that are useful to people, organizations and communities. The rapid changes we're witnessing on our home planet demand this strategy to meet the urgency of the moment," said Karen St. Germain, director of the Earth Science Division of #NASA's Science Mission Directorate. "This space has seen the emergence of large AI models that focus on a fixed data set and single use case – primarily forecasting. We have designed our weather and climate foundation model to go beyond such limitations so that it can be tuned to a variety of inputs and uses," said Dr. Juan Bernabe Moreno, director of IBM Research Europe (UK and Ireland) and IBM's accelerated discovery lead for climate and sustainability.
