NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM) paid internships allow high school and college-level students to contribute to the agency’s mission to advance science, technology, aeronautics, and space exploration. OSTEM internships offer students an opportunity to gain practical work experience while working side-by-side with mentors who are research scientists, engineers, and individuals from many other professions. Internships may be full time or part time; and, they may be on a NASA center or facility, or even working from your home or dorm. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and IBM release open-source #AI model for #weather and #climate applications Developed with contributions from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the model is available in open source to the scientific, developer and business communities, and offers a flexible, scalable way to address a variety of challenges related to short-term weather as well as long-term climate projection. ? "Advancing NASA's Earth science for the benefit of humanity means delivering actionable science in ways that are useful to people, organizations and communities. The rapid changes we're witnessing on our home planet demand this strategy to meet the urgency of the moment," said Karen St. Germain, director of the Earth Science Division of #NASA's Science Mission Directorate. "This space has seen the emergence of large AI models that focus on a fixed data set and single use case – primarily forecasting. We have designed our weather and climate foundation model to go beyond such limitations so that it can be tuned to a variety of inputs and uses," said Dr. Juan Bernabe Moreno, director of IBM Research Europe (UK and Ireland) and IBM's accelerated discovery lead for climate and sustainability. "While policy leaders around the world are pushing to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at an unprecedented speed, the science is still working to catch up, at least when it comes to measuring carbon sequestration rates and emissions at the farm level. The conventional way of measuring carbon is to look at what is currently stored in the soil, but Dr. Kaiyu Guan of the University of Illinois and his team, with funding provided by the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR), FoodShot Global, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. National Science Foundation, are working on a project to approach carbon movement from a whole system approach." This honor recognizes her outstanding contributions to research in satellite remote sensing for agriculture, both domestically and worldwide. ?? ?? As the former Deputy Director of NASA Harvest, a consortium that advances the adoption of Earth observations (EO) to benefit global food security, Dr. Whitcraft played a key role in the development of the Consortium from the ground up. Building on her success, Alyssa continues to lead in her role with NASA Acres, focusing on bridging cutting-edge #space technology with practical applications in U.S. #agriculture. ?She is also recognized for founding and directing the Harvest Sustainable and Regenerative Agriculture Initiative (SARA), which unites key stakeholders to build a robust evidence base for #SARA practices through the innovative use of EO data. Tatiana Loboda, Professor and Chair of the , praised Alyssa’s achievements, stating: "Her commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and mentoring the next generation of scientists has had a profound impact on our department, the university community, and the field of geographical sciences."
