We already know AI is mind-blowing and moving faster than the time it takes for me to write this post. But this year at SXSW, the AI conversations shifted. It wasn’t just about innovation: it was about power and control. Who gets to decide AI's future. People are, of course, more sophisticated in how they’re using the tooling (remind me to tell you about the man who specializes in cat deepfakes and was contacted by Anonymous… and then the CIA.) They are also more skeptical and for good reason. While the robots aren’t coming for us just yet…?They are coming for how we connect. 52M people are already using AI companions (think Character.AI, Replika, etc.) for loneliness, connection, and mental health right now. This is not a niche experiment. It’s happening at scale. Connection, brought to you by chatbot. What could go wrong?! ?? And while there are definite benefits to the technology, if you’re (ahem over 35), trusting the same people who built social media to now “fix” human connection is na?ve at best. The stakes are too high. Last fall, in partnership with Harvard and Omidyar, I helped lead a closed-door Chatham House program with OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Meta, investors, researchers, startup founders, and product builders to figure out:? - Where the hell this is all going? - What potential guardrails should exist? - How to ensure AI serves people, not just profit Not to stifle innovation either. If you know me, you know I want to empower entrepreneurs, commerce, and builders in every way I can. Just not at the expense of humanity. We can win and build people-centered AI and products. If you’re not following the work of Michelle Barsa (Omidyar Network), Ron Ivey (HumanConnections.AI), and others in this space, you should be. Their panel at “Tech We Want” was beyond relevant and brilliant. (video below) ?????? ?????????? ???? ???????? ?????? ????????: AI companion apps should not be used by kids under 18. Period. (This doesn’t mean all AI. This is specifically about friend/connection apps.) Also, research shows most people feel like they have zero agency in shaping AI, either because they don’t understand it or assume nothing they do will matter. That’s simply not true. AI isn’t magic. It was built by humans and is being shaped by humans in real time. That means ??????. Want to level up? There are free AI courses from MIT, Google, Coursera, Vanderbilt, Microsoft, etc. online. Check out the SXSW AI track for industry insights and trends below as well. The reality is: if we don’t engage, we don’t get to be shocked by the results.? This space is moving so fast and it needs you in the mix. <gets off soapbox>

OpenAI introduced generative AI to the masses with the well known "chatbot" pattern. Since then products like DALL·E, fal, Figma, Adobe, and Canva have rolled out GenAI tools that blend old and new design patterns—unlocking more than just text-based creativity. Some are inspiring, others… still iterating. ? At Naria, building our ?????????????????????? ?????????? has taught me something exciting: people ???????? ??????????, ??????????????????, ?????? ???????????? ???????????????? when they actively shape the creative output—picking the colors, crafting the story, and calling the shots. Rather than letting AI do all the work, they want to ??????????????????????. The AI’s role? Filling in gaps, handling the tedious bits, and amplifying human creativity. We call this the “???????? ?? ????????????, ?????? ?? ??????” pattern, and it’s sparked some incredible UX insights we’re weaving into our soon-to-launch native app. I’ll be publishing a deeper dive on Medium soon, along side our native app release. While growing up in China, Xiaoyin Qu really wanted to learn how to build paper planes — something neither her parents nor teachers really had the time or expertise to assist her with. She always thought it would be valuable to have her own coach to help her explore her passions and hobbies. Decades later, she decided to build such an interface herself. Qu is the founder of OpenAI-backed Heeyo, a new startup geared toward kids and their parents that offers a library of over 2,000 AI-powered interactive games and activities while also letting users build their own trivia and make-believe characters and content. Heeyo is not the only one. After initially taking the enterprise world by storm, AI has now started seeping into various other aspects of children’s lives. From AI-powered learning companions to storytelling platforms and kid-safe search engines, a flurry of new startups are aiming to help kids and their parents tackle a host of activities. And venture firms and accelerators from Techstars and Y Combinator to Pear VC and Magnify Ventures are backing them, actively investing in the space. Ah geez, I'm finally coming up for air! We're halfway through our Techstars accelerator and Naria is outpacing expectations. It's still early (pre-pre-seed!) and we're feeling the pull of Product-Market Fit already... from 5 different markets! O_O Since Jan 1 2024, our 3-person team has launched: - Reposing your character - Hardcover editions (8x8 and 12x12 which is ...HUGE) - Reworked reader experience - Create character from a photo (MAGICAL) - Halved image generation time - Reduced generation failures by 90%+ - Guest Checkout - Remix any story ... all while spending 30+ hours a week on Techstars, building out the business, investor meetings, customer calls, networking... And we're still sleeping 7+ hours a night (well not Jose Gonzalez, grats on becoming a parent), with weekends almost always offline.
