?? *Inspiration moment*: Scott Johnson, your "outhouse to penthouse" story from NANOG 93 had me absolutely floored. Seriously, what an incredible journey! As a former refugee, your vulnerability and perseverance hit home in a way I can't quite describe. And thank you, in the most humble way possible, for the mention! I was genuinely impressed by your knowledge sharing during one of the lunch session table topics. I remember thinking, "This guy needs to share this with the whole NANOG crowd!" Little did I know the amazing backstory you had! It's a great reminder that you never know who's watching, or who you might inspire. So, let's just go about shining our brilliance wherever we find ourselves, right? ?? Your work on interplanetary DNS is truly groundbreaking, and we're so lucky to have you sharing your insights with the NANOG community. #NANOG #Inspiration #Perseverance #SpaceTech #Community #ShineOn
"From outhouse to penthouse," a story to inspire and remind those grinding away at their dreams to persevere; those dreams really can come true: Last year, a wonderful fellow from the NANOG Program Committee, Les Williams, invited me to submit a talk for NANOG 93, recently concluded in Atlanta. The talk was on my recent work on Interplanetary DNS and SMTP, based on IPNSIG's 100 year vision for the Solar System Internet, and came off without a hitch, much to my relief. This story begins, however, some 23 years ago, as I sat in my father's old TV repair shop in our family home's garage. I was cutting my teeth on *NIX and a wide variety networking protocols, trying to wrap my head around how the largest and most complex integrated system in the world, the Internet, worked. I participated in various IETF and ISOC lists (mostly asking basic questions) as I built my first computer network out of parts salvaged from dumpsters. I saw that IETF 55 was in Atlanta, which was in range for me to reach from where I was located in Florida. I decided YOLO, I am going to go, and meet some of the folks I had been corresponding with in person. The only problem: I was not even a startup, but instead only a self-directed student with no budget for the trip. Lacking even a car, I found myself hitchhiking to Atlanta (and making lifelong friends along the way). As I arrived at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta, I had to get clever, fast. I had not registered for the conference, and had no place to stay. The former wasn't really a problem in those days, and the latter I solved by rolling out a sleeping bag under one of the tables on the conference floor, literally camping, thankfully hidden by the long, robust table cloth draped over my table. I was saved, on more than one occasion, from hotel security and Atlanta PD by other IETF attendees, who vouched that I did indeed belong there, despite my unconventional appearance and methods. As I sat in that same hotel last week, nervously awaiting the time for my talk, I leaned against a balcony on the conference floor, and saw the spot where I had camped all those years ago. This made me reflect on the trajectory of my life since that brazen act of "copping a squat" at a major technical conference. This calmed and centered me for the talk I was about to give, and so I proceeded to the big stage to describe, to the people that keep the Internet running, how I, in collaboration with some true networking giants, had solved the problem of Interplanetary DNS. I guess it went off well, as I was approached again and again with questions and congratulations. 23 years of unbridled curiosity, patience, persistence, a healthy portion of luck and the care of good friends had taken one silly hacker from camping on that conference floor to a spot on the agenda. I had gone, to quote Christopher Wallace (the Notorious BIG, rest in peace) "from outhouse to penthouse." Dreams can come true, if you make them :)

Scott Wilkinson spoke at NANOG in Atlanta. Demand for datacenter optics has exploded over the last year; 400GbE optics is over 3 million a quarter and 800GbE demand is close behind. 1.6TbE optics are coming fast, just waiting for the equipment to be ready to support them. As datacenters run out of space and power, the demand for optical interconnections between sites is driving demand for inter-datacenter optics.

Last week our Luca Davoli and Andrea Gattamorta were at NANOG 93 in Atlanta. It was a unique experience and we want to share here some of their thoughts. "A new and dynamic experience with an #Internet community at the forefront. We reconnected with old friends and met new contacts to explore the trends, interests, and opportunities emerging from across the Atlantic before reaching the old continent. #NetworkAutomation, #AI, #Cybersecurity and of course, essential #Peering were at the heart of our discussions. It was also the perfect moment to showcase our initiatives supporting our members and the wider community, who continue to know and appreciate us more every day, also in the US! Thaks to #NANOG93 for the brilliant organization". #ixp #community #tech #internet

Pleased to share that our tutorial has been published on the NANOG YouTube channel. This serves as an excellent introduction for network professionals to understand the benefits of the Kubernetes Resource Model for network automation, featuring a step-by-step lab and highlighting the new open-source initiative, KubeNet. We hope you find it as valuable and enjoyable as we did. https://lnkd.in/gRB3MQbA Wim Henderickx Alejandro Guevara Ivana Duvnjak Audie Hopkins Melissa Sieniecky Nokia Andrew (Drew) Elliott
