???? Exciting News! Nano Lab’s SEM images are now published in a book! We’re thrilled to announce that Nano Lab has collaborated with the incredibly talented artist and scientist Tyler Thrasher in his latest book, The Universe in 100 Colors. Tyler, known for his unique blend of art and science, invited us to contribute by capturing two fascinating subjects under our Nanoscience Instruments PhenomXL Scanning Electron Microscope. ?? In this collaboration, we imaged: ?? A lab-grown opal—a masterpiece created by Tyler himself, where we were able to reveal the intricate silica nanoparticles that diffract light and create the opal's mesmerizing rainbow of colors. ?? The chrysalis of a monarch butterfly, where we uncovered the spiracles—tiny structures that allow the chrysalis to breathe during its transformation. Truly a natural marvel, captured in stunning detail. This marks the first time Nano Lab’s work has been published in a book, and we couldn’t be more honored to see our images contribute to Tyler’s vision of blending the worlds of science and art. For those interested in learning more about The Universe in 100 Colors, we highly recommend checking out Tyler’s site: https://tylerthrasher.com/ and the book: https://lnkd.in/gyAiCKRd Whether you’re in art, science, or anywhere in between—if you’ve got a sample that needs imaging or analysis, let’s collaborate. ?? Starting the weekend off right: analyzing a precious sample for one of our key customers! We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with the FEI Apreo High-Resolution SEMat UC San Diego’s Nano3 facility. This powerful tool helps us push the boundaries of what we can see and analyze, delivering stunning detail at the micro and nanoscales. A few nerdy facts about the Apreo that we’re geeking out over: - Schottky Field Emission technology gives it an incredible edge for ultra-high resolution imaging. - With its beam deceleration and in-lens detection, it offers unprecedented contrast, even at low voltages. Perfect for delicate materials. - The achievable resolution? Just 0.8nm at 15kV and 1.0nm at 1kV with the immersion lens—allowing us to capture the details that matter. - Pathfinder EDS software from Thermo Scientific makes energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) user-friendly and efficient for analyzing the elemental composition of samples. The stage can accommodate samples up to 110mm in diameter, giving us the flexibility to handle a wide variety of projects—from materials analysis to device research. If you're ready to unlock the secrets hidden within your samples, let's chat! Whether it's SEM imaging, EDS analysis, or FIB cross-sectioning, we’re here to help you get the data you need. Reach out at [email protected] and let’s dive into the micro-world together! ???? #NanoLab #SEMLife #Microscopy #MaterialScience #TechExploration #FEIApreo #UCSDNano3

??? Uncovering the Hidden World of Silicon: Exploring a Decapped PAL16L8 Chip! ??? We teamed up with Labsmore.com to take a deep dive into the surface of a decapped PAL16L8 chip—an iconic piece of programmable logic from the 1980s. Using our Nanoscience Instruments PhenomXL SEM, we zoomed in on fascinating details like wire bonds, protruding traces, and even some tiny markings, such as “MMI 1988” and a series of numbers and symbols. Here’s a quick breakdown of what those markings likely mean: MMI 1988: Signifies the manufacturer, Monolithic Memories, Inc., and the production year. 57935B: Likely a lot or batch number for traceability in manufacturing. (C) and (M): Commonly indicate design copyright and the manufacturer's mark. XI with BBA underneath: Could denote a specific internal manufacturing or design reference. But remember, what you see on the surface is just the beginning. Beneath that top layer lies a complex network of logic and traces—a world of design that’s critical to the chip’s function. If you’re curious about what’s hiding beneath the surface of your samples, we’ve got the tools to help. Whether it’s mechanical grinding, polishing, or using focused ion beam (FIB) milling, we can reveal the layers below.
