The use of CO2 nanobubbles for facilitating the growth of photosynthetic microbes represents an innovative approach to enhancing the bioeconomy. By addressing the inefficiency of traditional CO2 sparging, which leads to the rapid escape of macrobubbles into the atmosphere, this technology leverages the unique properties of nanobubbles to improve gas dissolution and carbon utilization. Here’s a summary of the key points of the technology: ### Key Benefits - **Nanobubble Stability:** CO2 nanobubbles are stable in aqueous media due to their negative surface charge, which prevents them from coalescing into larger bubbles. This prolongs their stability, allowing for more efficient and sustained gas transfer. ?? - **Increased Surface Area for Dissolution:** Nanobubbles provide a larger interface surface area, improving the dissolution of CO2 in the culture medium. This means photosynthetic microbes can better access the inorganic carbon they require for growth. ?? - **Improved Carbon Utilization Efficiency:** By ensuring more CO2 remains dissolved and available to the microbes, this method significantly improves carbon utilization. It directly enhances microbial productivity and the production of bioproducts like biofuels, pigments, and fatty acids. ### Applications - **Biofuels Production:** Increased efficiency in growing photosynthetic microbes can accelerate the production of biofuels, making this a more sustainable energy source. ?? - **Biomass and Green Chemicals:** Nanobubble technology can be applied to the production of biomass and a wide range of green chemicals, including soaps, cosmetics, and food ingredients. ?? - **Economic Efficiency:** By reducing CO2 loss and improving process productivity, this technology reduces downstream processing costs, making it more economically favorable. ### Research and Development This technology, developed by researchers at Arizona State University and collaborators, aligns well with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while fostering sustainable industrial processes.
