Suicide rates have disproportionately impacted the American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The higher risk of suicide in Native communities is a complex issue depending on many different factors, including mental health conditions, substance use disorders, intergenerational trauma, and community-wide socioeconomic disparities. Here at NAMI, we are committed to improving suicide prevention in Indigenous communities. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

More than 100,000 people experience first-episode psychosis (FEP) every year in the U.S. Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) is a powerful, evidence-based solution that can transform the lives of individuals experiencing early psychosis symptoms, but it is estimated that only 10-25% of individuals experiencing FEP have access to a CSC program. Our latest research, in collaboration with National Council for Mental Wellbeing, National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) and the McKinsey Health Institute, illustrates the social and economic potential of scaling a CSC program. If 90% of individuals in the U.S. experiencing FEP received CSC, it could not only improve the lives of up to 800,000 individuals – as well as their families and caregivers – but also generate system savings of up to $140 billion over the next 10 years. Read the full report to learn how scaling CSC can help add years to life and life to years: https://lnkd.in/g-h4HZZa

"Mental illness may make a person feel as if they have no say or control over their life. Often, they may allow their caregiver to take control of their treatment because of their difficulty accepting the diagnosis or out of ambivalence. However, self-empowerment is key to recovery."
