This week, NAMI New York State participated in two impactful Advocacy Days at the Legislative Building in Albany. On March 11, we joined Common Sense Media for the 'Keep NY Kids Safe Online' Advocacy Day, working together to promote online safety for children. On March 13, our Board, staff, affiliates, young adults, and children came together to advocate for equitable access to mental health services, sharing our stories with assembly members, senators, and their staff. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to stand with us and amplify the voice of mental health and online safety advocacy.

NAMI NYS and NAMI Capital Region NY joined together to spread awareness at the 2025 Youth Summit Thursday, March 6. Hundreds of students and faculty from the greater Capital District came to engage in this learning and resource filled day. James Norton MCJ joined NAMI in 2025 as the Government and Community Affairs Manager after having spent 10+ years at the intersection of behavioral health and justice. Including roles with the State of New York, State of Vermont, NYS Senate, AHEC, EMS, Public Safety, and Fire. He has focused mainly on the opioid crisis and still works with Recovery centers and Harm Reduction groups. James also continues to work as an adjunct professor of criminal justice and volunteer local politics. As the point of contact for legislative and policy questions, James is available to discuss your questions or meet with community groups to discuss mental health concerns in your community.
