NAMI Minnesota is excited to share a new grant opportunity from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) that aligns with our advocacy efforts. DHS is seeking proposals for culturally responsive, person-centered early interventions aimed at preventing people from meeting the criteria for civil commitment and promoting positive outcomes for those living with a mental illness. Proposals are due by April 14, 2025, with the anticipated contract period running from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026. By prioritizing early intervention, this effort aims to reduce hospitalizations, enhance community support, and foster recovery-oriented outcomes. For more details, including the full Request for Proposals (RFP) and application materials, visit the DHS grants page: DHS Open RFPs: https://lnkd.in/e_Ggj2Vd We encourage eligible organizations to apply.

Crucial mental health research, which has produced promising results over the past years, is seriously threatened. Amid tears and deep concern, experts in the field, people living with a mental illness, family members, and policymakers have called today during a press conference organized by NAMI Minnesota in Minneapolis for an end to the recently proposed federal funding cuts of at least 118 million dollars on research in Minnesota that will affect people living with mental illness and society at large. https://lnkd.in/guKVMEeJ

Mental health advocates gathered in Minneapolis to discuss their future amid the federal government's plan to cut costs. Minnesota has long been a leader in mental health research, with institutions conducting groundbreaking studies on the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric disorders. However, potential cuts to federal funding could threaten this progress. Last month, the Trump administration called for steep cuts in how medical research grants are funded. A federal judge then temporarily blocked the cuts after 22 states filed lawsuits. Local advocates say the cuts would directly target research done here in Minnesota. In 2024, the National Institutes of Health gave out $32 billion in research grants. That could drop by $5 billion if the cuts are allowed. "[Elon Musk] has canceled or delayed research grants that have been authorized by congress, with no explanation," said Sen. Tina Smith. "They are unilaterally cutting research funding with no notice." In 2024, indirect costs — which are tied to grants to assist with research — made up 25% of cost funding. "Cutting edge research requires investment, it requires people and researches to do that work," said Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig. "We should be doing everything we can to improve our mental health services for children and adults and ensure they can get they evidence based life saving care they need. We should be moving forward, trying to make progress with our research and innovation — not backward," said Minnesota Rep. Kelly Morrison. https://lnkd.in/gTaRWcCb

NAMI Minnesota and This Is Medicaid are hosting a non-partisan roundtable discussion to educate South and Southeastern Minnesota community members on the Medicaid program and proposed federal changes that could impact mental health services in the state. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 18th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Blue Earth County History Center, 424 Warren Street, Mankato, MN. Medicaid, known as Medical Assistance (MA) in Minnesota, is the largest funder of mental health services in the state, covering 1.3 million Minnesotans, including families, seniors, individuals receiving long-term care, and those with mental health and substance use disorders. Recent discussions in Congress suggest significant funding cuts and policy changes that could jeopardize access to essential mental health care services. Speakers at the roundtable include Sue Abderholden, Executive Director of NAMI Minnesota, Shannon Brown from Fernbrook Family Center, community members affected by mental illnesses, and advocates. They will discuss the potential impact of federal budget cuts, per capita caps, block grants, and work reporting requirements on Medicaid enrollees. The roundtable will highlight how Medicaid covers critical mental health services such as therapy, crisis response, and psychiatric care. Attendees will also learn how to engage with lawmakers to advocate against harmful policy changes. This event is free and open to the public. Community members, healthcare professionals, journalists, and advocates are encouraged to attend and learn more about how to protect Medicaid.
