The bad apples of the solar industry got a lot of press this year. They got so much attention that the federal government is taking action. A whole group of government agencies – U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO), Dept. of the Treasury, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, and the Federal Trade Commission – are working on a holistic solar consumer protection and education plan. “I’ve definitely seen the bill go down. My first month with solar my bill was $10 and the month before it was $150. My average monthly payment was $146 before solar. I don’t know how many more years we’ll be staying in this home but either way, it’s definitely worth it.” – Nelson Chen on how solar has financially impacted him. Namaste Solar is an employee-owned cooperative. At Namaste Solar, that means any employee can be a co-owner if they choose. If they choose to buy in to the company, they then have one share and one vote – meaning no one can buy any more shares than anyone else. This ensures voting power that is equal across all co-owners, regardless of position. Our co-owners participate in owner meetings, can run to be on our board of directors, and use their voting power to make important company decisions. Every employee-owned cooperative looks a bit different, but Namaste Solar’s model is focused on cooperative ownership, democratic decision-making, and extreme transparency. https://hubs.li/Q02WwGkX0

A New Mexican Senator, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Lujan, recently introduced the Community Solar Consumer Choice Act which is legislation that would support community solar projects and expand access to solar energy across the country, regardless of income. The idea is that directing more resources to those who can’t host residential solar on their roofs would expand renewable energy, lower costs for consumers, support good paying green jobs, and help with climate mitigation.
