?Celebrating Latinas in Healthcare This Women’s History Month!? ??This week we are proud to highlight Dr. Jessica Gomez, a Bilingual Licensed Psychologist and Executive Director of Momentous Institute. With over 18 years of experience, Dr. Gomez has dedicated her career to improving the well-being of children and families. Dr. Gomez’s journey is inspired by her own childhood experience navigating mental healthcare. Today, she continues to empower others by fostering inclusive spaces, mentoring the next generation, and ensuring families have access to the resources they need to thrive.?? ?What personal experiences or professional influences led you to pursue a career in healthcare, and how have they fueled your passion for serving others?? From an early age, I knew I wanted to be in the healthcare field because I was driven by a deep desire to help others, to support their healing journey. However, my own childhood experience of needing mental health care and struggling to find a therapist who truly understood my culture and family dynamics played a pivotal role in shaping my career path as a bilingual clinical psychologist. It was then that I made a commitment to help children and families navigate the challenges of mental health recovery—an area still burdened by significant stigma for so many. ?If you could give your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be and why?? Trust your intuition, your gut instinct. Science has now shown that our gut is like a second brain, often picking up on things before we even consciously realize it. Over the years, I’ve learned to trust my intuition and listen to that inner wisdom. For too long, I doubted it, not recognizing that it’s often rooted in logic, experience, and facts. ?What motivates you to empower and uplift women in healthcare, and how do you strive to make a difference?? I am deeply committed to paying forward the support and guidance that so many, especially women, have offered me throughout my career. These were individuals who saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet recognized in myself. Mentorship of the next generation is crucial to ensuring we cultivate a diverse healthcare field. Join us in celebrating Dr. Gomez’s dedication to mental health and community advocacy! Who is a woman that has inspired you in your career? What a night! ? Thank you to everyone who joined us at our NALHE DFW General Body Meeting! It was incredible to connect, share our chapter’s vision for the year, and explore ways to get involved within the chapter. A special thank you to Children's Health Plano for hosting our event and to Kris Sanders, FACHE for sharing insights on the recent expansion. It was fascinating to learn how children's hospital in Plano is growing to better serve the community. ?? We’re also grateful to Dr. Joan Fernandez for shedding light on the critical role of diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare. One key takeaway? The misconception that patients with darker skin tones aren’t at risk for skin cancer — highlighting the urgent need for more inclusive dermatology education and care. Dr. Fernandez, your expertise and leadership continue to inspire us! This is just the beginning—stay tuned for more opportunities to engage, grow, and make an impact with NALHE DFW! ?Celebrating Latinas in Healthcare This Women’s History Month!? ??This week we are proud to highlight Dr. Diana Mendoza, DMS, MPAS, PA-C, a board-certified Physician Assistant (PA) and the Director of Advanced Practice Providers (APP) for Pediatric Specialties at UT Southwestern Medical Center. With a doctoral degree in medical science, she leads a team of over 350 nurse practitioners and physician assistants across pediatric subspecialties, shaping the future of healthcare through leadership, mentorship, and advocacy. ?? ?What personal experiences or professional influences led you to pursue a career in healthcare, and how have they fueled your passion for serving others?? My early experiences as a patient at the local FQHC allowed me to witness first hand how important access to care is. ?If you could give your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be and why?? Remain curious! Creativity is the cornerstone to solving the problems and obstacles that meet the path of today’s clinicians and healthcare leaders. Keep asking questions and remain curious to fuel creative problem solving and collaborations. ?Who are some women leaders or trailblazers who have inspired you in your career, and how has their leadership shaped your path in healthcare?? By far my mother! She instilled in me an ethic of hard work, grit and a strong sense of purpose. These remain core values for me today and are invaluable in the evolving healthcare landscape. ?Are there any books or podcasts that have been particularly impactful for you as a woman or Latina?? I’m a fan of the inspiring words of Brene Brown, Angela Duckworth, Kara Lawson and Mel Robbins. The book I last read was a powerful and touching one-- For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts: A Love Letter to Women of Color By Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez provided reflections that resonated with many experiences of my journey in education and early career. Join us in celebrating Dr. Mendoza’s remarkable leadership and unwavering dedication to healthcare! We would love to hear about a woman who has inspired you in your career. ?Celebrating Latinas in Healthcare This Women’s History Month! ? ??This week, we are delighted to shine a spotlight on Nancy Hernandez, an Ambulatory Service Representative at Children's Health. Nancy’s journey in healthcare is a remarkable testament to resilience, passion, and the profound impact of mentorship. ?? ?What personal experiences or professional influences led you to pursue a career in healthcare, and how have they fueled your passion for serving others?? From a young age, I was motivated by a desire to help others, especially in healthcare. I started volunteering at 15, which solidified my passion for providing care. After moving to this country, I faced challenges like language barriers and limited guidance, but these experiences only made me more determined. My work as a medical assistant and now as an Administrative Service Representative has deepened my commitment to serving others. My involvement with NALHE has had a profound impact on my career, providing opportunities to develop leadership skills, expand my network, and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by communities. I believe that obstacles can transform into valuable skills, and NALHE has reinforced my commitment to overcoming barriers and making a lasting impact. ?If you could give your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be and why?? If I could give my younger self one piece of career advice, it would be to embrace challenges with confidence and trust in my abilities. Early in my career, I sometimes doubted myself, especially when stepping into new roles or responsibilities. However, I’ve learned that growth comes from stepping outside of my comfort zone. If I had believed in myself sooner, I would have taken more opportunities to develop my skills and advance faster. Every experience—whether a success or a learning moment—shapes who we become, so I would tell my younger self to take chances and keep moving forward. Let’s come together to honor Nancy’s amazing journey and the incredible influence she continues to have in healthcare! Who’s a woman who’s inspired you?
