Henrietta Lacks (1920–1951) was an African American woman whose cancer cells, taken without her knowledge during treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951, became the first immortal human cell line, known as HeLa cells. These cells have been instrumental in numerous medical breakthroughs, including the development of the polio vaccine, advancements in cancer research, and insights into virology and genetics. The use of her cells without consent has also sparked important discussions about ethics in medical research and patients' rights.
