On Day 2 of the Hispanic Health Policy Summit, NAHN-Illinois joined over 100 members from across the nation on Capitol Hill to advocate for policies that address healthcare workforce shortages, advance maternal health, and promote climate resilience. Hill Day is a critical opportunity for nurses to meet with legislators and ensure that the voices of both healthcare professionals and the communities we serve are heard at the highest levels of government. With nearly 15,000 nurses needed in Illinois by 2025 and only 6% of the state’s nurses identifying as Hispanic, increasing workforce diversity is essential to providing culturally competent care. We also raised awareness of the disproportionate health impacts climate change has on Latino communities, with 56% living in areas affected by extreme weather. As National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025, this day reminded us of our ongoing mission: to advocate for policies that create equitable healthcare systems and empower Hispanic nurses to lead change in their communities.
