Happy #IEW2024! Today we announce new data today that show that 1.1 million international students at U.S. colleges and universities contributed $43.8 billion to the U.S. economy during the 2023-2024 academic year and supported more than 378,000 jobs. The economic activity total is the highest amount ever calculated by NAFSA, eclipsing the highwater mark of $41 billion in 2018-2019 academic year. This is the third straight year of recorded increases following the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Said NAFSA executive director and CEO Dr. Fanta Aw: “International students’ contributions to the U.S. are significant and multi-faceted, and this year’s record-breaking economic total is the latest proof of that. Yet we cannot be complacent. The annual increase in economic activity is about half of what it was the year before, signaling that the pent-up demand for a U.S. education following the pandemic is subsiding. Meanwhile, competition for the world’s best and brightest is increasing. "The United States must adopt more proactive policies to attract and retain global talent. We cannot afford to lose international students’ meaningful positive impact on American students’ global competence, our economies, and our communities, particularly in the areas of STEM-related research and innovation.” Explore the data by state and congressional district and view year-over-year trends at https://lnkd.in/ea_-Rhth

  • Results from the Global Enrolment Benchmark Survey are in! NAFSA, Studyportals, and Teaching English with Oxford collaborated to produce the Global Enrolment Benchmark Report based on the survey responses of 365 institutions across 66 countries. The report highlights significant obstacles universities are currently facing, their enrollment trends compared with last year, and their outlook for the next 12 months. Among the key findings: many institutions reported a decrease in enrollments in August and September compared with last year and cited restrictive government policies and visa issues as significant factors affecting enrollment. To gain a deeper understanding of the factors shaping enrollments worldwide, download the report and register for a December 2 webinar with representatives from the partner organizations.
