Just in time for National Primary Care Week, Newsweek's new article looks at the 10 states with the least accessible healthcare in the U.S. It also quotes NACHC's landmark report showing nearly 1/3 of Americans don't have access to a usual source of primary care. “Tenia un sue?o”… “I had a dream of what it could become,” says Mrs. Carmen Martinez, who we are featuring for Hispanic Heritage Month. Mrs. Martinez is one of the founding mothers of what is today San Ysidro Health in San Diego County. In 1969, Mrs. Martinez, along with several other mothers who had few resources, organized a community group to advocate for healthcare for women and children with no access to doctors. ???? Mrs. Martinez worked during the day and at night met with stakeholders to establish San Ysidro’s first site, a little white house — “la casita” — staffed entirely by volunteers. We must invest in primary care at a level that reflects its immense value. Primary care is the only part of the healthcare delivery system where an increased supply is tied to better population health and equitable outcomes. Yet, as the Milbank Memorial Fund has documented, the United States continues to underinvest in primary care. Currently, national spending on primary care is only 5-7 cents of each healthcare dollar. In their “2024 Primary Care Scorecard” report, Milbank Memorial Fund recommends greater investment in the nation’s largest network of primary care providers: Community Health Centers. #NPCW Graphic credit: Primary Care for America
