If you look up the definition of servant leadership, you’ll see a photo of Dr. Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, President and CEO of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC). With an established career at the intersection of healthcare and policy, he’s a subject matter expert in many areas that pertain to our work at Serve the People. To say we were all eager to comment when he asked individually and as a group, “What’s on your mind? What can I help you accomplish?” would be an understatement. From discussing the barriers our patients face to suggesting creative opportunities for funding, our time with Dr. Rhee helped us be the best and brightest leaders, narrowing our focus and inspiring solutions. Good news for a Friday afternoon: The Biden Administration has included $260 million in its supplemental funding request to support Community Health Centers that are providing primary care to patients affected by Hurricanes Helene, Milton, and other recent disasters. The funding request comes after NACHC sent a letter to the Office of Management and Budget urging the Administration to consider the importance of protecting disaster-struck communities’ access to primary care in its request to Congress. In the letter, Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, President & CEO of NACHC, explained the impacts of disasters on health center patients: “As safety net providers operating on razor-thin margins, health centers – and their communities – will struggle to recover from these disasters without dedicated federal support. Hurricanes Helene and Milton affected dozens of health centers across the southeast of our country, disrupting operations and causing severe hardship for health centers’ staff and patients. When health centers are knocked offline, diabetic patients miss appointments, pregnant women miss prenatal visits, children miss routine vaccinations, and behavioral health patients have their therapy interrupted. These interruptions in care not only worsen patients’ health but also lead to an increase in avoidable hospitalizations and emergency department visits, further straining a healthcare system that is otherwise focused on emergency response.” Read the full letter on the NACHC website: https://lnkd.in/gqX9ZuXp #ValueCHCs #CommunityHealthCenters
