Today's #WednesdayWisdom comes from 2005 Kauffman Award winner and 2001 Academy of Fellows inductee Patricia Carretta, who says organizations such as NACE can provide members with ample opportunity for personal and professional growth. "I often advise people new to the profession that the best professional and leadership development opportunities will be found within their associations. I was fortunate to have access to associations at the state, regional, and national levels, and was welcomed into and offered meaningful experiences to expand my knowledge, gain access to mentors and friendships, and develop my professional skills and leadership capacity."

Amid the shifting landscape of companies urging a return to in-person work, adjusting benefits, and increasing work demands, how to balance being a professional and caregiver is a pressing concern for many, including myself. How can individuals effectively manage full-time work alongside caregiving duties? For me, it may mean catching up on work after 10 p.m. while everyone is asleep. Reflecting on my own experiences transitioning into leadership roles, I found myself shouldering more responsibilities and expected to increase my contributions. Even within the career services and the higher education sector, I often receive requests for after-hours and weekend programs?while maintaining full service during regular business hours. As a leader, I try my best to provide flexibility for my team and prioritize what I can truly say "no." Besides managing these expectations, as an Asian American, my cultural values have always been centered around the need of my family. As an immigrant, I take on the responsibility to support family and even serve as a caregiver for my parents, my child, relatives, and even my extended family. From managing medical and personal care to translating documents and handling benefits questions for others, I tend to take on these responsibilities and expectations, not just as a favor but as?an obligation. In the past, I prioritized these responsibilities over professional advancement, valuing flexible workplaces. How can effective workplace policies, resources, and advocacy support working professionals who are also managing caregiving duties? In what ways do cultural values and caregiving obligations influence one's career path, especially with Asian, Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) professionals? How can organizations adapt to support, recruit, and retain this changing workforce? Join me as I explore these questions with my colleagues Grace P. and Rachana V. at the upcoming webinar hosted by the APIDA Professionals and Allies Affinity Group at the National Association of Colleges and Employers. AAPI Heritage Month Celebration - Navigating Caregiving & Work Responsibilities as APIDA Professionals. Date: Thursday, May 1, 2025 Time: 1 pm to 2 pm EST/10 am to 11 am PST This webinar is open to all NACE members. Will I see you there? A special shout-out to Alice Grgas, Vicky Lee, M.Ed., M.S., Bless Vaidian, Dina Djedovic, and the NACE team for helping to organize this event. #NACE #APIDA #AAPI #WorkingParents #Caregivers #CareerDevelopment #Asian #AsianAmerican #NACE
