As Black History Month comes to a close, while it is important to reflect on the significant achievements of those that came before us, we must acknowledge our emerging young black trailblazers. We praise these young people for their excellence, groundbreaking work and the inspirational legacy they are already leaving for those to come. The National Association of Black Compliance & Risk Management Professionals, Inc. (NABCRMP) is a member-based 501(c)(3) non-profit association for African-American compliance and risk management professionals. The primary purpose of the organization is to develop, encourage, and strengthen members and their communities by providing training and professional development opportunities, expanding members' professional networks, supporting members seeking higher levels of accomplishment, assisting members with identifying business opportunities, promoting diversity and inclusion as essential to risk governance, and encouraging diverse students to make risk governance and compliance their chosen profession. Members of NABCRMP represent corporations, financial institutions, law firms, accountants, consulting firms, government agencies, trade associations, universities and non-profit organizations. Our professionals work across a variety of business industries and sectors, including banking and financial services, health and life sciences, employment, telecommunications, consumer products and agriculture, and cybersecurity. Together, we represent every spectrum of compliance, corporate governance and risk management, ranging from risk officers, advisors, policy and procedure specialists, compliance analysts, compliance managers, chief compliance officers, board of directors, lawyers, accountants, consultants, corporate counsels and general counsels. As we punctuate Black History Month, I am honored for the privilege being a part of a history making initiative. The first Risk Management + Insurance major at an HBCU will be available this Fall! Southern University and A&M College- Baton Rouge, under the leadership of Sherman Pittman (sherman pittman) and John Pierre, will be the home of the first Risk Management and Insurance major at a Historically Black College and University. This project exists in the intersection of my career and community while affording me to flex my compassion for humanity. Benjamin L. Crump, Esq. invited companies to lean in to the possibility of making a significant difference in marginalized communities and Alliant Insurance Foundation responded by funding this beautiful possibility. Working with Karissa Freano and Lilian Vanvieldt-Gray is such an evolutionary experience. I appreciate and applaud their passion for this work. The ingenious, Ken Goldstein of Spencer Educational Foundation, is bringing it all together as he "quarterbacks" this effort with such amazing grace. This program is such a well thought out offering proactively addressing obstacles to set students up for success. In addition to a quality education, this program offers scholarships, pad internships, mentorship, and an opportunity to visit the birthplace of insurance, Lloyd's of London. I look forward to bring you all along the journey with me as we fill the available seats for the inaugural RMI program at SU! “Legacy of Leadership: Celebrating Black Excellence in GRC” Excellent presentation hosted by the NABCRMP. A few takeaways from today’s discussion: 1. In house professionals: identify a mentor, adviser and sponsor. Understand the difference between these champions and the important role that each plays in your career journey. 2. Outside consultants: career transitions often opens the door to new opportunities you would have never considered had it not been for unforeseen events (e.g., layoffs in the regulatory sector). 3. Compliance Officers: functioning in this capacity, you must have thick skin. The role itself often faces opposition, but knowing that you are a key player (often mandated by law) will help ensure that the trains run on time. Your input matters. 4. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Enough said. 5. Know your worth. Thank you Nat'l Association of Black Compliance & Risk Management Professionals, Inc.
