Excited to share MZA’s design submission for The Shanghai Park Pavilions, a collection of four distinct civic landmarks woven into a public park at Dishui Lake, the centerpiece of Nanhui New City in Pudong, Shanghai. This centralized greenspace offers a unique opportunity to integrate architecture with nature. Rooted in the four fundamental elements—Water, Earth, Sky, and Wood—each pavilion invites people to engage with history, technology, and culture. Yesterday, I joined the NAIOP field trip at The Eight, the latest class A office tower in downtown Bellevue. Over 100 people attended making it the largest group ever for a NAIOP field trip. The building is currently 80% leased, with Pokamon set to become the largest tenant by the end of the year. The project began during the COVID period, which forced the team to establish a new design goal: how to address office usage in a post-COVID world. Their strategies include creating maximally flexible spaces, incorporating numerous informal working and social areas, and connecting people with nature by integrating various outdoor decks within the vertical structure. The first two floors are primarily dedicated to tenant public spaces and retail. Among the amenities is a gym with an in-house trainer, available to all tenants free of charge. A floating informal meeting area is featured in the two-story atrium, and a stepped-down public lounge following the site slope on the ground floor provides an ideal setting for gatherings, social events, and informal meetings. This area introduces a hospitable atmosphere into what would otherwise be a fairly blank office lobby. Additionally, the public restroom on the group floor is a must-see space, complete with a 1970s-inspired decor. The typical office layout features a concrete, off-center core with steel bracing at the building perimeter, allowing for a column-free space spanning over 60 feet at the deepest location, ideal for large corporate tenants and significantly enhancing office floor plate efficiency and flexibility. The dark metal exterior, quality detailing, and oval-shaped form make The Eight a distinctive office tower in downtown Bellevue. Kudos to Skanska and the design team for creating another high-quality tower that enriches the Bellevue skyline!

We are delighted to congratulate Diane Carlson on her appointment as the new permanent City Manager of Bellevue! With her deep understanding of Bellevue’s needs and vision, we are excited to see her continue leading with the same dedication and expertise she has demonstrated since becoming Acting City Manager. We look forward to Diane’s continued success in guiding Bellevue toward an even brighter future!
We are excited to announce our new permanent city manager, Diane Carlson! If she looks familiar, it's because she's been acting city manager since December. "To be able to hire someone of Diane Carlson’s caliber into a major leadership position with her historic knowledge and without having to have a transition period ... is invaluable," Mayor Dr. Lynne Robinson said Tuesday after the council unanimously appointed Diane. https://lnkd.in/g-v5dcfU

This summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Career Day at my son and daughter's school. While I've done many presentations, this one was truly special. The 5-year-olds were very engaged, while the 3-year-olds were a tough crowd! Seeing the pride in my kids' eyes and the amazement on their classmates' faces was priceless. It reminded me of the impact we can have as architects and the importance of inspiring the next generation by sharing our passion for the profession. #architecture #careerday #mzaarchitecture
