This is not Father’s Day, but it is my Father’s Day.? Today would have been my father’s 100th?birthday (I’m not that old people!!!) The lessons I learned from a man born in 1924 are immense, categorically Hall of Fame, book and/or movie production worthy.??- I must add, because math is hard - that he was 47 when I was born (so there!) My dad grew up in extreme impoverished conditions in Bolt, West Virginia – well, of course there was Little Jimmy Dickens…, the son of a NSL coal miner, had an 8th?grade education (read: left school to provide for family), member of the CCCs in its later years, volunteered to serve in WW II (ummm might not have been of age – shhhh, don’t tell), crossed the English Channel 13 times as a Merchant Marine (despite not having any veteran status or post-war benefits), saw the inside (read: prison), became a wildly successful entrepreneur in the printing and graphics trade industry, and above all else, taught me some of the most valuable lessons of my life.???? The most important lesson I learned was super early – I entered our house, long-faced with my newly granted Lieutenant badge for Safety Patrol in 6th?grade – I can do ANYTHING I WANT. Mom/Dad – oh, wow, you got a badge! Me – yeah, Lieutenant, Mr. Nester said I couldn’t be Captain because I’m a girl.? Dad – WHAT??? (btw, we lived next door to the school) Mom as my dad started darting for the back door – Nelson! No!!! Too late. Dad (me in tow) running to Park Hills Elementary.? Nelson to Mr. Nester: Don’t you ever tell my daughter or any other daughter she can’t do something because she is female, ever.? From that moment forward, I was forever empowered to do anything I wanted.??Try.??Fail. Succeed.??But TRY.??I earned my Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating before college.??Miraculously graduated from Florida Tech (seriously a miracle).??I’ve enjoyed a full career based on ONE job application – it’s relationships that matter – another lesson I learned from my dad. So today, not the national Father’s Day, but My Father’s Day, I encourage everyone – man, woman, binary, and alike – try, try, try, and succeed – and NEVER let anyone tell you can’t because you’re _____.??
