Education Day Keynote Speaker Jane Georges, PhD, RN Dean & Professor, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science University of San Diego Dr. Jane Georges began working as a nurse’s aide in 1970. She is a native of San Diego County and obtained her RN at the University of California San Francisco School of Nursing. She returned to UCSF and received a Master of Science in Nursing degree as a clinical nurse specialist. Jane loved teaching in the California State University system and decided to pursue a PhD in Nursing Science degree at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1996, she became an Associate Professor at the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science at the University of San Diego and has remained there for almost 30 years. In 2018, she became the fourth Dean of the Hahn School of Nursing, a role she considers “the greatest privilege of my professional life.” She has published widely in books and nursing journals, and her work has received international recognition. Her scholarly work examines compassion in nursing and ways to maintain it in the face of the extremely stressful work that nurses do. Education Day Moderator Lorraine Evangelista, PhD, RN, CNS, FAHA, FAAN Professor Emeritus, University of California Irvine, School of Nursing Lorraine S. Evangelista is a full professor at the University of Texas Austin School of Nursing. Before this appointment, she was a Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Nursing. She is renowned for her work on biobehavioral, psychosocial, and biological factors influencing psychological well-being, functional health, symptom clusters, self-care behaviors, quality of life, and clinical outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure. She has over 150 papers (H-index=45) and two book chapters and has garnered over $15 million in research funding from the National Institute of Health. She has received several recognitions, including being a fellow of both the American Heart Association and the American Association for Nursing (2010), Distinguished Alumni of the University of the Philippines College of Nursing (2010), Shannon Mentorship Award (2017), and Distinguished Research Lectureship Award from the Western Institute of Nurses (2021), Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Research Hall of Fame, Katharine Lembright Award for a Distinguish Nurse Researcher (2022) and University of the Philippines International Nursing and Healthcare Forum, International Nurse Award (2022). She is a pristine nurse scientist, scholar, and educator, received BSN from Jordan and MSN from Virginia. After receiving her PhD from University of Rochester in NY, completed post-doctoral fellowship at Notre Dame, Indiana. She brings wealth of knowledge and diverse experience. She has numerous publications and presentations on health and culture. She leads multiple-multisite/multisystem nursing research studies. She spearhead variety of national/international leadership roles and positions serving multiple professional originations. Her groundbreaking scholarly activities among Arab/immigrant/minority/women was recognized internationally by MDLinx and Sigma the Honor Society of Nursing. Dr. Kawar is intensely committed to the health and wellbeing of patients and their families. Currently, she focuses on advancing health by investigating issues related to patient outcomes, high quality safe nursing care including equity, diversity, and inclusivity across healthcare settings. Kawar’s original interest in culture sparks current research advocating for nurses’ satisfaction and positive work environment. Her passion and dedication are advancing the art of nursing science and clinical practice through meeting the highest standards of professional and work ethics.
