Happy Friday! During these last 15+ years working in the Supply Chain & Tech industry, I have become friends with amazing professionals and business leaders. These professionals and leaders are solving tough problems for their customers while building resilient Supply Chains. I thought it would be wonderful to showcase the important work that happens in moving products from point A to B and the people who help make this a reality every day. To showcase these individuals and their work, I have been ruminating on a podcast idea for months and finally its coming to life. My podcast called "The Silk Road" will air on your chosen podcasting platform (Apple, Spotify, youtube etc) next Wednesday and will recur every month. The Silk road of the yesteryears created trade routes that connected the Eastern and Western worlds from the second century BCE until the mid-15th century. This Silk road podcast will instead take you deep into the ever-evolving world of Supply Chains & the people who move these complex supply chains. Hope you will tune in, review, subscribe and cheer our guests along the way. Stay tuned as we unveil, The Silk Road podcast with our first guest, Juan Cora, CEO and Founder at Aquatio. Juan will walk us through his journey to entrepreneurship, sharing advice for new founders, the challenges that the shipping office and the related stakeholders face in the journey to digitization, and how Aquatio is in a race to solve this for the 3pls. You will not want to miss Juan's story and his passion for the Supply Chain industry. In the meantime, here is a short snippet of the problem space that Juan and his team are addressing - silo'ed tech stacks, paper, emails and phone trails and still continuing to meet the customer where they are! #TheSilkRoad #entrepreneur #supplyChain #logistics

The elegance of Kanchivaram Sarees Vanakkam! Kanchivaram sarees, also known as Kanjivaram sarees, are an exquisite testament to the rich cultural heritage of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. The legacy of these sarees dates back to the reign of the Chola Dynasty, approximately 400 years ago. During this period, the art of silk weaving flourished, especially with the migration of two prominent weaving communities from Andhra Pradesh to Kanchipuram. These artisans brought their unparalleled expertise and began crafting sarees inspired by the region's temples and mythological narratives. Each Kanchivaram saree is a labor of love, a masterpiece cherished and passed down through generations. The Weaving Process The creation of a Kanchivaram saree is a meticulous, labor-intensive process that unfolds in several steps. These sarees are crafted from pure mulberry silk, renowned for its durability and rich texture. The process involves three primary stages: Preparation of Silk Threads: The silk threads are dipped in rice water and sun-dried to enhance their thickness and stiffness. This treatment ensures that the fabric remains strong and long-lasting. Dyeing: The silk threads are then dyed in vibrant, striking colors, readying them for the intricate weaving process. Weaving with Zari Threads: The dyed silk threads are woven together with zari threads, made from silver and gold, which add a distinctive sheen and shimmer under light. The weaving typically involves the use of three shuttles, with the border and pallu (the part of the saree that drapes over the shoulder) often woven separately and then interlocked. This technique, known as the korvai weave, ensures the saree's durability, even if it tears. My Experience in Chennai Every visit to Chennai is incomplete without a trip to purchase beautiful silk sarees. On my last visit, I discovered a boutique in Kilpauk called Kanakavalli. The visionary behind this boutique curates unique designs through a weave her family owns in Kanchipuram. I highly recommend scheduling an appointment to visit the store. The staff at Kanakavalli were incredibly attentive, taking the time to explain the nuances of each saree and helping me try them on. It was a delightful experience to adorn such stunning sarees. If you find yourself in or around Chennai, a visit to Kanakavalli is a must. It's truly worth your time. I left with a gorgeous chocolate brown saree adorned with gold butta and a pastel border, a piece that I will cherish forever.

More interesting conversations this week some even highlighting what Rahul R had commented in the last post around personalization. Thank you Rahul ?? for planting the seed through your comments. Two topics from my conversations this week and last ? Data - In speaking with two Chief Supply Chain Officers I learnt that there is troves of data available, all in disparate systems and in a fragmented nature that pulling a single pane of glass connecting the dots from factory to customer was nearly impossible. Standards are rarely available especially since these systems have come through acquisitions and have differing technologies. A few folks that I spoke to said that they made significant investments to bring the tech stack to par so the data across could be utilized and better insights gleaned. But most felt the investment required to do this was difficult to procure, especially with both supply chain and labor shortages during and after COVID. Some stronger e-commerce providers like Amazon and Walmart have invested to get the data layer cleaned up enough to garner best in class insights making data driven decisions though. The CSOs were asking for simpler ways to utilize this fragmented system and we spoke about adding cross references across these systems as a way to tie them together. A few have tried this approach but its still a bit of a bandaid. Somehow they are still able to utilize human intelligence and data to run their supply chains smoothly. The biggest challenge more so than insights and decision making that was called out was inaccurate inventory that has led to store wide cycle counting practices that are truly not affordable both from a labor and time perspective and these have shown to be inaccurate. If there are providers that could help tie all of these disparate systems to provide better inventory control that seems to be an immediate need of the hour. ?? Personalization - A solid PIM (Product information management) has helped e-commerce providers the ability to personalize content for their customers, bringing in order history, preferences and product information together to bring together this personalization - know your customer across their shopping journey. These experiences have been well received. Over the years we have prioritized operational efficiency, leveraging a smaller set of designs to mass produce taking away the ability to personalize to a customers needs. When such personalization is available there is a long lead time to get the item. A few operators spoke about using their existing supply chains and getting creative with new manufacturing workflows for customized goods that utilize the same WMS and TMS infrastructure as leverage. There is still an open opportunity to get this level of personalization while streamlining operations and design productivity especially when the supplier is overseas. Lots to think about! Enjoy your weekend and talk to you next week!
