My Tribe Media proudly sponsored the second annual First-Gen Celebration edit-a-thon. Organized by La'Tonya "LT" Rease Miles, the event featured an all female BIPOC team of editors who updated the articles of #firstgen writers and artists with a special focus on their educational journeys. We look forward to expanding and growing this program. Later this year, we will host a How To Edit for Wikipedia event. #celebratefirstgen #mytribemedia #representationmatters #yourstorymatters

Before ordering another first-gen t-shirt for students — especially with National First Gen Day on November 8th — take a moment to listen to this powerful conversation. Alexia "Lexie" Pineda Soto, Ed.D. and Dr. La'Tonya "LT" Rease Miles reflect on the deeper intention behind these artifacts, raising important questions: Why are we creating these shirts? What purpose do they serve? What legacy are we building? At My Tribe Media, our mission is to transform how people think about first-gen experiences, moving beyond symbols to create lasting impact and meaningful change. ?? Celebrating First-Gen Excellence in Campus Life! ?? Last year, the University of Kentucky took a bold step to celebrate National First-Generation College Student Week by sharing first-gen student stories during halftime at their campus basketball and football games! ???? This was a fantastic way to elevate these students' voices and truly weave their experiences into the fabric of campus life. Highlighting first-gen journeys in such a public forum demonstrates how campuses can embrace and celebrate the diversity of their student body in meaningful ways. It’s initiatives like this that create a sense of belonging and recognition for these trailblazers. ?? ?? What are others doing on this level? How are YOU or your institution highlighting the first-gen experience? Let’s share ideas and uplift these powerful stories together! https://lnkd.in/gSD4bFpC #FirstGen #HigherEd #StudentStories #MyTribeMedia #NationalFirstGenerationWeek #CampusLife

Why Do Elite Institutions Dominate Our Screens? Did you know nearly 45% of Americans, including figures like Gov. Tim Walz, attended regional public universities? Yet when it comes to how higher education is depicted in TV shows, memoirs, and movies, the focus is overwhelmingly on private, elite institutions. This imbalance in representation skews our collective understanding of where the majority of students—especially first-gen and nontraditional students—are being educated. At My Tribe Media, we are committed to diversifying the portrayal of higher education in mass media and pop culture. We believe that the stories of regional public universities, community colleges, and the experiences of transfer and adult learners deserve just as much attention. By telling these stories, we reflect the realities of millions of students whose paths to success differ from the traditional, Ivy League-centered narrative. What’s one film, book, or TV show that positively represents regional public universities or the experiences of nontraditional students? If you can’t think of one, why do you think these stories are missing from mainstream media? Let’s discuss! #HigherEd #MediaRepresentation #RegionalUniversities #PublicEducation #FirstGen #MyTribeMedia #HigherEdInMedia https://lnkd.in/gekFkNPU

??? Big applause to I Will Soar, winner of the 2023 CATALYST Award for Best Documentary! Directed by Jane Swanko and featuring Coach TJ Jackson, this powerful film highlights the often-overlooked journey of first-gen student athletes. ?? ???? The judges loved the focus on this group, and institutions can use this documentary in a few impactful ways: 1. Host screenings followed by discussions to build solidarity among first-gen athletes, using Coach Jackson’s story as a tool for motivation and reflection. 2. Incorporate the film into training for academic advisors and coaches to better understand the unique challenges and needs of first-gen athletes. 3. Screen I Will Soar during orientation to inspire new student-athletes and show them the power of resilience and community. Let’s keep the momentum going for our first-gen athletes! ??? #IWillSoar #CATALYSTAwards #BestDocumentary #FirstGenAthletes #RepresentationMatters
