What happens to an injured worker who doesn’t have a nurse case manager on their claim? A finger stick, a laceration, a “simple” injury – probably they turn out just fine. But the complex cases? Honestly one has to wonder – how does an injured worker best navigate the system and advocate for themselves? It can’t be easy. Let’s look at a slip and fall injury that resulted in chronic hip pain. The case was referred to our nurse case management services a full six months after the accident injury. Within 4 weeks of the referral, our NCM had secured a surgery date with an approved provider, obtained all authorizations, scheduled home health services and arranged DME deliveries from approved vendors. She provided support and education to a person whose whole existence FOR SIX MONTHS was pain focused without a clear treatment path. It’s a hip strain. A bruised hip. Do more PT. Rub some dirt on it. Seriously, the delays in care, treatment and ultimately an appropriate diagnosis may have continued for who knows how long? Chronic hip pain for this patient turned out to be caused by Stage 4 AVN. The best nurse case managers don’t have an agenda other than what is best for their patient. They ask the right questions, they use their critical thinking skills, they dialogue with the doctors, they advocate! What happens to an injured worker who doesn’t have a nurse case manager on their claim? It can’t be easy.
