关于我们

My College Counselor was formed to help students, from freshman to senior year, get all the information they need to make an informed decision about their college choice. As counselors with over a decade of experience working with students across the country, we understand the stress that comes with selecting majors, writing essays, and completing lengthy applications. That’s why we have a free, self-paced course that you can register for. If you love the course, and feel that you could use additional, personalized guidance, we have several paid plans for students and for parents or guardians. Our platform is convenient and easy for students to use, including a bi-weekly check-in to keep Seniors on track. College isn’t just 4 years after senior year. It’s a wonderful experience that shapes you and gives you invaluable skills to start your career after graduation.

"Middle-income Americans have borne a disproportionate share of college price increases, too. For them, the net cost of a degree?has risen by from 12 to 22 percent?since 2009, depending on their earnings level, compared with about 1 percent for lower-income families, federal data show. Now a handful of schools — many of them private, nonprofit institutions trying to compete with lower-priced public universities — are beginning to designate financial aid specifically for middle-income families in an attempt to lure them back." https://lnkd.in/ee-5VjZF

Have you told someone that: ? all college disability services offices require learning disabilities (LD) testing to be no more than 3 years old, or: ? all their student needs to request disability accommodations at college is their high school IEP or 504 plan?? If so, you’ve (unintentionally) misinformed them. Don’t feel bad – it means someone else misinformed you. You’re not alone. Yesterday in my Facebook group, I answered a parent’s question about whether they should have their student’s LD testing updated for when they register for accommodations at college. I typically turn off commenting after I answer questions (so that members see only accurate information), but I forgot. When returned & read the information some members put in the thread, I saw how pervasive the misinformation is. Here’s what you need to know. Neither Section 504 Subpart E nor the ADA (the laws in place at college) tells colleges what documentation they can/can’t require. Therefore, colleges are allowed to set their own requirements. Some colleges do require testing that is 3 years old or fewer (I‘ve seen this), but others don’t. A recent study* looked at nearly 300 DS sites & found 46% of those they reviewed didn’t specify recency.? In that same study of college DS sites: ? 14% specifically said an IEP or 504 weren’t acceptable ? 35% said an IEP or 504 were useful but not sufficient ? 10% said it was sufficient The only way for students to find out what they’ll need to request accommodations is to check the DS website at the college they’ll attend. (Those applying to college can do this for the schools on their list.) Learn how they find the requirements by reading (https://bit.ly/LDblog109x) or watching (https://bit.ly/LDAv5) For the most detailed discussion of documentation, read Step 7 of my book, Seven Steps to Success: A Pathway for Students with Disabilities. I hope you’ll also share my post on myths about documentation (https://bit.ly/LDblog150x) & my brief video on how old disability documentation can (https://bit.ly/ECHFAQ2) In my private Facebook group, I have a master post on documentation. Students with disabilities are getting all kinds of terrible advice about college admissions by people who are sharing their opinions as facts and who have no idea no data exists to support what they're saying. Some professionals are giving damaging advice about getting students off their high school plans or switching the kind of plan they have because they have no idea admissions won't see them. I know because parents ask me about these things. Have you heard: ? Myth 1: Students should be moved from an IEP to a 504 plan for senior year because it “looks better” when they apply to college. ? Myth #2: High school students should get off any kind of plan (IEP or 504) and stop using special education services and accommodations because it will show on their record, and this will hurt their chances at being admitted to college. ? Myth #3: Students should disclose their disability when applying to college because there’s a quota of students with disabilities each college has to accept. ? Myth #4: Students should not disclose their disability in their college application because it puts them at a disadvantage. ? Myth #5: If students haven’t met colleges’ admission criteria, they should disclose their disability because colleges have to adjust their requirements for students with disabilities. ? Myth #6: Students who don’t want to disclose their disability when they apply to college should do so anyway because colleges’ diversity initiatives mean they’ll be at an advantage. ? Myth #7: If students disclose their disability and don’t get into "College X", the sole reason for their rejection was that they have a disability. All of these myths above are just that...myths! Check out my blog post on this (or my book!) to get the facts. All of these myths above are just that...myths! Important data shared by Niche…Over half of the students surveyed reported a lack of support from their HS counselor during their college search/application experience. This is understandable as caseloads are at an all-time high and School Counselors are expected to wear a number of hats. Our goal is to help fill that void with affordable and accessible college counseling. mycollegecounselor.org

Lover of Data | Passionate Teacher and Student | Enrollment Management Professional

School or college counselors played a major role in helping a student make their enrollment decision. 38% of enrolling students said that their counselor influenced where they chose and 7% said that they helped determine where they are at this fall. BUT... Only 58% of students said that they had a counselor at their school that was able to support them and 17% said that they had nobody in their live supporting their search. That means no support from parents/guardians, older siblings, counselors, CBOs, or IECs. Let's advocate for more counseling support in schools.

Awesome perspective. The discussion around "How will we find these hidden gems without test scores?!?!" - the answer - trust your staff to do the work to find them. They know their territories, can read school profiles, can look at historical data from their own institutions, etc.

Educational Consultant. Bringing the lens of 38 years in elite US higher education to the mission of student access, centered on students from developing countries and diasporas.

I’m in Rwanda observing a College Board presentation; it cites the Cornell University Task Force’s report issued this past April along with the announcement imposing SAT/ACT requirements for next year’s high school seniors. I was part of the Task Force through May 2023. I appreciate the thorough work my former colleagues achieved and most of the language in the report. However, the paragraph cited suggests it was a meaningful data point that non-submitters didn’t perform as well as submitters. In my observation, the data underlying this conclusion were not by themselves persuasive about the necessity to return to requiring the tests. Pointedly, statisticians on the task force compared submission with later survey data to establish that non-submitters had achieved significantly lower average scores (a fact which surprises no one). So—while non-submission correlated with (slightly) lower achievement levels within the overall extremely well-qualified Cornell entering Class—the act and choice of not submitting was not itself any meaningful predictor of performance. Indeed, there was far more abundant evidence on the other side showing that Cornell’s excellent undergraduate admissions offices and readers had continued to identify well-prepared students without having assured access to SAT/ACT data.
