With persistent gaps in VHF distress communications, MXAK has stepped up to enhance coverage, relay emergency calls, and ensure no “Mayday” goes unheard. From the Marmot Bay rescue near Kodiak to countless other lifesaving interventions, our 24/7 watchstanders and expanding network of Marine Safety Sites are helping mariners when it matters most. While we work alongside the U.S. Coast Guard to supplement and strengthen distress communications, we remain committed to expanding coverage in critical areas.   • ??Exciting News! ?? We’re thrilled to announce the new and improved MXAK Environmental Data App - a powerful tool designed to meet the needs of Alaska’s vast maritime communities. This app integrates data from MXAK's Marine Safety Sites, NOAA, NWS, and more into one streamlined, easy-to-use platform, providing critical environmental insights in real-time. New features include: ?Customizable Layers – Access data from multiple agencies in one place. ?Streamlined Design – Works on ALL devices, even in low-network areas. ?Faster Data Access – Make real-time, informed decisions while navigating Alaska’s vast waters. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing videos showing the various new features and app functionality. Additionally, we want to hear from you! We’re proud to present our Maritime Distress Communications story, highlighting the critical work we’re doing to enhance communications across Alaska’s vast and challenging landscapes. From filling communication gaps in USCG’s Rescue 21 network to deploying advanced VHF-DSC technology, our goal is simple: ensuring that no “mayday” call goes unheard. Our new interactive Story Map showcases: ?? Expanded VHF-DSC Coverage – Over 62 DSC Receivers and 22 VHF VoIP Stations, covering underserved areas at a fraction of the cost. ? Real-Life Interventions – Stories of how MXAK has stepped in during potential emergencies, including the F/V Defender "Mayday" call, Genius Star XI fire, and Pan Viva near grounding incident. ?? Interactive Map Layers – Explore current and planned service areas through our user-friendly map tools. This ongoing project underscores MXAK’s commitment to protecting Alaska’s mariners and supporting the blue economy by filling in vital communication gaps and enhancing safety infrastructure.   • ?? Last week we wrapped up our annual MXAK board meeting, and we couldn’t be more excited about the year ahead! It’s always an honor to host our board, a remarkable group of leaders representing the many facets of Alaska’s Blue Economy—including commercial fishing, marine pilots, shipping, tech, and more. Their enthusiasm for our mission and commitment to maritime safety energizes everything we do. A special highlight was lunch with Rear Admiral Megan Dean, where we had engaging conversations about the challenges and opportunities in Alaska’s maritime world. Her perspective fueled our passion to continue supporting the USCG’s critical work while advancing our own mission. Thank you to our board, Admiral Dean, and our hardworking crew for making this a meaningful and successful meeting.
