An emergency shelter in place order means more than just staying indoors. If there is a chemical, biological, or radiological threat in your location, sheltering in place means creating "safe room" inside your home that is sealed and shielded from harmful elements (including chemicals or radiation) if authorities order you to remain in place instead of evacuating immediately. Sheltering in place is typically a short term protective action (i.e. several hours, not several days) but you want to be prepared ahead of time with a plan and supplies. It's also important to make sure you are signed up for emergency alerts from your local or county authorities so you can receive orders to shelter in place via text or email. Here's how to get started: Pick a designated room in your home—perhaps a master bedroom connected to a bathroom—and get supplies ready. One thing you can prepare ahead are plastic sheets or tarps to cover your safe room's doors, windows, electrical outlets, and vents. Ideally they would be pre-cut to fit over these areas and labeled ahead of time, but if not, don't panic! Garbage bags or even your shower curtain can be used to cover these four key areas where hazards can enter your safe room. Other supplies to store in your safe room include a battery-powered radio, water and non-perishable snacks, towels, and blankets. Your #SafetySaturday to-do list: ?
