“Lyrics are the connective tissue between music, language, and speech.” – Emir Demirel Ph.D. ISMIR 2024 has wrapped, but we’re still immersed in the world of Music Information Retrieval (MIR). Every day, Music AI offers us the chance to learn from our colleagues and explore the fascinating intersections of art and technology. Last weekend, our Emir Demirel Ph.D. presented on the science of lyric transcription and the unique challenges it entails: ?? Unlike regular speech, singing has distinct characteristics: pitch variation, sustained vowels, and the presence of background music all add layers of complexity. Lyric transcription is not just about entertainment. It has profound implications for assistive technologies, helping the hearing impaired and fostering connections across languages through localization. Here’s to the incredible work in #MIR and making music more accessible! ISMIR Conference #ISMIR2024 #AI #Inclusion

At Music.AI, we're focused on enhancing – not replacing – human creativity. That’s why?our General Counsel and VP Business & Legal Affairs Seth Goldstein joined industry leaders at MONDO.NYC OCTOBER 14-17, 2025 to tackle two critical issues: 1. Why stronger creator protections and clear compensation standards are essential for AI's future in music. Dani Deahl (BandLab Technologies) moderated this panel featuring Seth alongside Zohaib Ahmed (Resemble AI), Todd Dupler (The Recording Academy), and Michael Pelczynski (Voice-Swap). Altogether, they agreed there was a need for ethical standards around consent, credit, and compensation, with a focus on protecting creators’ rights in an increasingly AI-driven landscape. 2. How companies are negotiating and structuring deals in the generative AI space that respect artist rights while driving innovation. Seth and co-panelists Adrian Perry (Covington & Burling LLP) and Yoshi Kondo (SOUNDRAW) explored opportunities for companies committed to ethical AI development, from licensing datasets for AI training to properly compensating artists for the use of their voices in AI voice modeling. Thank you MONDO.NYC, Recording Industry Association of America? (RIAA) and Covington & Burling LLP for inviting us to participate in these crucial conversations about the future of music technology. This week at Music Tectonics, Music AI's Matt Henninger discussed the significant change he has seen from last year. In 2023, hundreds of of AI companies were emerging, but only a handful have remained this year—those that built their businesses around respecting the music industry. On the panel Matt was joined by Dani Deahl (BandLab Technologies),?Corey Sheridan (ADA Music), and Zeynep Yasar (Rock Paper Scissors, Inc.) for “Building Bridges Between Music and AI” to discuss the future of AI innovation in the industry. #AI #MusicIndustry #artificialintelligence #musicinnovation

Following Covington & Burling’s Fireside Chat, Adrian Perry, Partner and Co-Chair of Music Industry Practice, Covington & Burling LLP, chatted with Yoshi Kondo, Global Operations, SOUNDRAW; & Seth Goldstein, General Counsel & Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs, Music.AI, about the unique challenges and opportunities AI startups face in the music industry in “Dealmaking in Generative AI.” Although both Soundraw and Music.AI focus on ethical AI development, Soundraw trains their AI in-house and Music.AI offers cloud services. The panelists emphasized the difficulty of navigating the complex, litigious music landscape, which makes investors cautious but also creates opportunities for those doing things "the right way." New business models are emerging in AI, from trading properly licensed data sets to developing royalty structures for training AI on artist voice recordings. Perry, Kondo, and Goldstein determined that fostering ethical AI practices will help bridge the gap between artists, labels, and technology firms, positioning AI as a mainstream tool in music production.
