Manatt Entertainment Leader Jordan Bromley, in his capacity as a Board member with the Music Artists Coalition (MAC), helped finalize a multiyear agreement for a successor contract to the SAG-AFTRA National Code of Fair Practice for Sound Recordings. MAC, Jordan and Susan Genco played an instrumental role in finding a solution that establishes guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of #artificialintelligence in the music industry in addition to ensuring that singers and recording artists are protected. On Friday, the Music Artists Coalition submitted comments to the U.K. Parliament regarding an open consultation on the issue of an extension of rights in sound recordings and performances to foreign nationals. To make a complex issue simple: the U.K. is looking at changing how public performance rights in radio broadcasts are paid. Currently, the U.S. is one of the few nations that does not pay artists on radio broadcasts of their sound recordings. Because of this, countries like the U.K. do not offer reciprocity of rights with artists from the U.S. (and other countries with similar policies) regarding remuneration for radio play. Among the solutions the U.K. considers is reciprocity for these rights, regardless of the laws in an artist's home nation. While we continue to fight in the U.S. to get musicians a right to remuneration for sound recordings played on the radio, MAC applauds Parliament for reexamining this issue and, as we state in the attached letter delivered as comments to the open consultation, strongly encourages Parliament to adopt Option 1 and see all artists as equals, regardless of their national origin.
