Today, as we cast our ballots, let’s reflect on the legacy of Shirley Chisholm—a true political pioneer who, on Election Day in 1968, became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York’s 12th Congressional District. A former teacher and consultant for NYC’s Division of Day Care, Chisholm entered Congress with a mission: to advocate for policies benefiting children, families, and marginalized communities. In Congress, Chisholm co-founded both the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus, pushing for programs like Head Start and food stamps that remain vital today. And just four years after her congressional win, she made history again by becoming the first Black person and only the second woman to seek a major party’s nomination for president in 1972—100 years after Victoria Woodhull’s groundbreaking candidacy. Though her bid faced immense opposition, she won votes in 14 states and secured 152 delegates, standing as the most successful female presidential candidate of her time. Chisholm’s journey didn’t stop at policy—she inspired future generations. “The next time a woman runs,” she said, “or a Black, or a Jew… I believe that he or she will be taken seriously from the start.” __ Voter registration, Unidentified photographer, 1963, Reproduction, Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries Graphic Photograph

Happy 138th Birthday, Lady Liberty! ?? #OTD in 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty in front of thousands gathered in New York Harbor, marking its official gift from France to the United States. Sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and engineered by Gustave Eiffel, the statue required over 300 pieces of copper assembled into the iconic monument we see today. Originally intended as a celebration of American independence, it quickly became a powerful symbol of hope for immigrants passing through Ellis Island. In 1968, Shirley Chisholm (1924–2005) burst into national politics as the first Black woman elected to Congress. Just four years later, the Brooklyn native ran for the nation’s highest office, president of the United States: a historic first for a woman in any major party. While Chisholm did not win the nomination, her bold campaign and promise to be a candidate for all Americans mobilized a diverse range of supporters, inspired generations of young people, and changed the nation. By breaking barriers for other women lawmakers and elected officials of color, Chisholm changed who felt like they belonged in Washington. Explore Chisholm's life and legacy with a visit to “Changing the Face of Democracy: Shirley Chisholm at 100:” https://lnkd.in/eU-KdnDa Don’t miss our panel on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 7:30 pm, as Dr. Jelani Cobb, Dr. Zinga Fraser, Dr. Keisha Blain, and moderator Sandra Bookman will discuss Chisholm’s ongoing influence on Black women in politics — including Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for president. "New York’s most glamorous dollhouse returns to the Museum of the City of New York next month." —?The New York Times?on the Stettheimer Dollhouse, which will go on view later this fall following an extensive conservation project. A new exhibition, "The Stettheimer Dollhouse in a New Light," heralds its return to our galleries and opens on November 22. Handcrafted over nearly two decades by Carrie Stettheimer, the dollhouse captures the elegance and vibrancy of post-World War I New York City. As the city thrived as a cultural hub for art, theater, literature, and fashion, this extraordinary miniature world reflects the stylish lives of the Stettheimer sisters—Carrie, Ettie, and Florine—who were key figures in New York's early 20th-century artistic community. A significant artistic enterprise in its own right, the dollhouse also features miniature works by renowned artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Gaston Lachaise, showcasing the vibrant cultural milieu of the time.
