MCASD's new special exhibition, ?????? ???????? ????????: ??????, ????????????????, ?????? ????????????????????, is now on view in the Museum’s Strauss Galleries and Farris Wing. Starting this month, ?????? ???????? ???????? continues on floor –3 with a rotating series of films and videos that extend the exhibition’s key themes. Plan your visit today: https://lnkd.in/g6HQgEq6 Moyra Davey’s film ?????? ?????????????????? takes its title from the American statesman Aaron Burr’s description of Mary Wollstonecraft’s two daughters, Fanny Imlay and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, and their stepsister, Claire Clairmont. Imlay, Shelley, and Clairmont were inheritors of their mother’s remarkable legacy in their resistance to norms, in lives marked by the structural misogyny that limited their freedom, and by mental and physical illnesses, suicide, and substance use. Davey’s film interweaves their stories with events from her own life and the lives of her siblings and her own child, together with meditations on photography. Chronically ill and disabled artists have often found alliances through an embrace of the generative possibilities that emerge from states of bodily vulnerability. Our new special exhibition, ?????? ???????? ????????: ??????, ????????????????, ?????? ????????????????????, explores how such experiences become catalysts, spurring changes in medium, method, and scale—and in turn, prompting adaptation, improvisation, and a reorientation to the world. Music isn’t necessarily about listening, and hearing is not always an auditory experience. What is the role of sound and what does it mean to listen? Filmmaker Alison O’Daniel uses a series of tuba thefts in Los Angeles high schools as a jumping-off point to explore these questions. ?????? ???????? ?????????????? (2023) is a holistic exploration of musicality and the expansion of sound. Join us on Friday, November 1 at 5:30PM for a screening of the film and a Q&A with the filmmaker, Alison O'Daniel. Visit our newest exhibition, ?????? ???????? ????????: ??????, ????????????????, ?????? ????????????????????, where medicine can be understood as a support group and many of the featured contemporary artists have worked collaboratively with their peers to highlight relations of interdependence and care. For example, for their performance ?????????????? ???????????? (?????? ????????, ????????, ?????? ??????), Carolyn Lazard lay in bed and received 24 visitors over the course of a day. Each visitor brought a bouquet of flowers, a common symbol of visiting the sick. After the performance, the 24 bouquets were displayed as a sculpture. Plan your visit today! Maren Hassinger came to fine arts and performance through a background in dance. A communion of forms and fascinations materializes in this steel sculpture whose aesthetic is based in Minimalism with a postminimalist affect. Made by a Black artist working in Los Angeles's vibrant arts scene, ???????????????????? (1975) connotes a felt awareness of marginalization and a lived experience of the restrictions placed on Black mobility. See ????????????????????
