关于我们
Uncover your calling in one of the country’s leading nursing schools. Our programs are taught by skilled, research-helming educators and provide access to interprofessional and clinical opportunities found nowhere else in the state. As the country’s second-oldest nursing school, the Medical University of South Carolina’s College of Nursing evolves with the profession. Looking ahead to adapt how we train the next generation of RNs, nurse practitioners, researchers and leaders, we consider our students’ greater impact, both through the care they’ll provide and how their skills close the existing healthcare gap. Today, that progress materializes as results-driven online learning, faculty-led palliative care training across all programs, engaging clinical opportunities and collaborative research with other MUSC colleges. MUSC is the only integrated, academic health sciences center in South Carolina. Our college also has a strong nursing research program, which ranks in the top 30 of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our researchers proudly contribute through collaborations with colleagues across MUSC’s campus. We’re recognized as one of the top 100 universities in the country for funding. In a world of constant change, we skillfully prepare our students for the ever-evolving role of a nurse, so they can change what’s possible in the lives of their patients and the populations they serve. Our college educates more than 600 students each year, and they go on to earn baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees. No matter your career stage, see how you can foster the future of the nursing profession and join the next generation of nurse leaders.

Our first trailblazer in Women’s History Month is Marguerite Andell, a true pioneer in nursing and the longest-serving director of nursing, leading from 1924 to 1948. A 1914 graduate of Roper Hospital Training School for Nurses, Miss Andell’s career spanned general duty, private duty and public health nursing before she stepped into leadership. As superintendent of nurses and director of the Roper Hospital Training School, she pushed reforms ahead of her time, such as replacing the grueling 10-hour day shift and 12-hour night duty with the now-standard eight-hour day. Her legacy is one of dedication, innovation and advocacy, shaping modern nursing as we know it. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, the Waring Historical Library developed a series dedicated to highlighting a handful of the extraordinary woman graduates, faculty, and staff at MUSC, starting at the first woman graduate of MUSC through today.

Every March, Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to recognize, honor and celebrate the countless contributions of women throughout history. At MUSC, women have played a vital role in shaping our institution, from pioneering educators and groundbreaking researchers to dedicated caregivers and influential leaders. This month, we reflect on the legacy of trailblazing women whose work has left a lasting impact on health care, education and science. We would be remiss not to recognize the fact that countless women – past and present – have helped to shape MUSC into what it is today. This year, we chose to highlight four extraordinary women whose contributions broke barriers and paved the way for future generations.

Dr. Carrie Cormack recently spent 8 amazing days in Eswatini, Africa, alongside palliative care leaders Patrick Coyne (MUSC), Judy Paice (Northwestern) and Keith Swetz (University of Alabama). ??? During their time there, they held a 3-day End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Symposium at the Good Shepherd College of Health Sciences (GSCHS), with 57 participants. They had the opportunity to visit patients in the hospital and their homesteads, gaining valuable insights into the impact of palliative care. Dr. Cormack hopes to continue these relationships through ongoing virtual support and collaboration. #MUSCNursing #ELNEC
