Yesterday, NBC News spotlighted the FireSat constellation, emphasizing its potential to tackle the escalating wildfire crisis. It was a fantastic experience collaborating with our incredible partners—Google Research, the Earth Fire Alliance, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation—to share this groundbreaking technology. “Today there is a set of satellites that are used for fire, none of them were designed for fire… Old satellite images are able to show images of fires burning the size of a football field with the frequency about once or twice a day… This new family of satellites only focuses on fire and can see an area burning as small as a family’s swimming pool producing a new high resolution image every twenty minutes, and this constellation has the capacity to cover all corners of the globe.” - Jonny Dyer, CEO Muon Space ?? ?? Muon Space & Google: Advancing Wildfire Detection from Orbit ???? “Most wildfire tracking today uses aerial photography via airplanes or low-resolution satellite imagery that’s been repurposed for the task. The former is expensive, limiting how frequently it can be updated, while the latter suffers from low resolution and sensors not specifically tuned to wildfire detection. The FireSat constellation is designed to solve both of those problems.” ?? A major milestone: FireSat, a first-of-its-kind satellite for wildfire detection, has successfully launched from SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and is now undergoing its protoflight mission in space! This is a crucial step in detecting wildfires earlier. Current satellite imagery is either low-res and frequently updated, or high-res and updated a few times a day, making it difficult for firefighters to detect fires quickly. When the full FireSat constellation is operational, our partners at Earth Fire Alliance will be able to provide high-res multispectral imagery as frequently as every 20 minutes to firefighters and the emergency response community. FireSat will use AI to compare the current image with the prior thousand images of the same spot (revisit time), take local weather and other factors into account, and then reliably determine if a fire is present in the image. It will enable the detection of fires as small as 5x5 meters–about 1/400th the size of current early detection satellites. FireSat data will also help scientists better understand wildfires by creating a global historical record of fire spread. Designed and built by Muon Space, this is a prototype satellite, the first three operational FireSats are slated to launch in 2026, with the rest of the constellation building out in the following years. Congratulations to our partners at Muon Space, Earth Fire Alliance, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, on this revolutionary breakthrough! We’re excited to announce the #FireSat protoflight successfully launched over the weekend as part of SpaceX's Transporter-13 mission! ?? Developed and operated by our technical partner Muon Space, FireSat is a first-of-its-kind satellite constellation purpose-built to address the global wildfire challenge. As devastating wildfires affect communities worldwide, this mission has never been more urgent. FireSat will help end users better protect: ??Lives ?? Communities ?? Ecosystems ?? & Economies Through our Early Adopter program, we’re working closely with fire agencies and technology providers to refine FireSat data products and ensure they can integrate seamlessly into operational workflows. This protoflight milestone is the culmination of the efforts of hundreds of first responders and scientists with leadership and support from Google Research and Google.org, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Environmental Defense Fund, and others. And it's just the beginning! The first three operational FireSats launch in 2026, with a full constellation of 50+ satellites planned by 2030.
